Josh Charles Set to Lead New Fox Series Adaptation “Best Medicine”

I’d like to say that I always knew that talented thespian Josh Charles was going to have a significant impact in the world of film and television. After all, I was one of those 1989 moviegoers who clamored to go see – and wound up falling in love with – Peter Weir’s coming-of-age drama Dead Poets Society. That film was not only a great star vehicle for the incomparable Robin Williams (earning him a deserved Oscar nomination) and gave a nice spotlight on luminaries such as Norman Lloyd and Kurtwood Smith, but it also served to properly introduce to audiences a whole new crop of fresh-faced talent who would go on to contribute their own verses to the world of acting. Ethan Hawke was a standout among standouts in that film, as was Robert Sean Leonard, Gale Hansen, Dylan Kussman, Allelon Ruggiero, and James Waterson. And, of course, so was Josh Charles who captured teenage awkwardness and self-discovery as the lovelorn Knox Overstreet. Charles was good- really good – so yes, I’d like to claim that I had some psychic sense that he would go on to have his own solid and healthy acting career. But truthfully, I didn’t. Charles was just one kore well-cast actor among a whole cadre of ‘em. And while I hoped and wished the best for him and his career, I didn’t necessarily follow his career at the outset the way I followed Hawke’s or Leonard’s. Boy, did I miss this one, because Josh Charles obviously did go on to establish himself in such future projects as Sports Night and The Good Wife. And now he’s back to once again razzle and dazzle all of us with an upcoming television series from Fox.

From our Crossing the Bridge pals over at The Hollywood Reporter comes the news that Josh Charles has been cast as the lead in the upcoming Fox series Best Medicine, which itself is an adaptation of a popular UK show entitled Doc Martin.

Best Medicine is meant to be a sixty-minute comedy about an acclaimed surgeon who ditches the plaudits of the big city in favor of spinning his medicinal wares in a small fishing village where he grew up.

In a press release touting the upcoming series, Fox Big Wheel Michael Thorn enthused that “The story of Doc Martin has resonated worldwide with its humanity, originality, and humor, and with Best Medicine coming to Fox, that eccentricity gets a small-town America spin, complete with idyllic charm and absurdity…”

So, I absolutely lowballed the career trajectory of Josh Charles back in 1989. Wanna know something, though? I’ve never been happier to have underestimated a really good acting talent and to be proven wrong in my underestimation.

Best Medicine is set to make its anticipated house-call int he 2025/2026 Fox season lineup!
