INTERVIEW: Lola Kinsey

1.) We’re super-excited to have some time today with acclaimed alt-pop-rock artist Lola Kinsey; greetings and salutations Lola and thank you for taking time out of a busy schedule to speak with us here at Vents Magazine! Before we dive into the Q&A mosh pit, how is 2025 finding you and yours?

The best so far! Finally releasing music steadily and reached my main goal of getting into a major music festival at SXSW!

2.) Major kudos and accolades on your stunning new anthem, Your Parent Don’t Like Me which is lighting up record charts across the ever-loving globe even as we speak! Starting at the top, can you talk about what inspired this gem of a ditty?

Oh man, so this one is sadly a true story that’s currently ongoing. When I met my current boyfriend he was coming off of a relationship where both sets of parents were really close. Like, BEST FRIEND close. I was coming in as a new-comer to the party so it was really hard at first to incorporate myself into the fold. I will say it’s gotten better. There was a time when he was grounded and we couldn’t see or talk to each other and this song came to me during that period.

3.) The companion music video for Your Parents Don’t Like Me is unforgettable in all the very best ways you hope a music video will be; congrats! How involved were you in the overall look and feel of this visual masterpiece?

I’m very fly by the seat of my pants. I had this idea but we didn’t totally storyboard it down until the day before we filmed. The place was always set. There’s a big open field in my hometown that is stunning going into Spring. Spring was significant to me and this album, ‘Come of Age’, because it’s obviously the time of new growth. However, one important aspect of the visual I wanted was that I didn’t want to fit into the scenery. I wanted to be an abject horror, your parents worst nightmare, fit into a lovely field that’s perfect in nature. Myself being a force of nature but not one with it. Also, fun fact, I got to dress-up my metal head of a boyfriend as a cowboy!!

4.) Who did the producing honors on Your Parents Don’t Like Me and what did the in-studio collaboration between artist and producer look like while fashioning and shaping the single?

This track was 100% homegrown. My dad produced the music and I wrote the lyrics and melody. I also helped with some of the production. We have an in-house rag and bones studio. Literally blankets on walls to dampen the noises. Me and my dad work really well together, but it’s family so lots of opinions ha!

5.) In your humble opinion, what differentiates the Your Parents Don’t Like Me single from the Distinguished Competition on the current day music landscape?

The 80s are definitely having a resurgence. Look at what Benson Boone is doing right now and it’s very heavily 80s influenced. While my music is in a similar vein I think what separates me are my influences. I’m a massive Linda Ronstadt fan. The mix of 80s country with pop is something I play with a lot. My first single sounds VERY country influenced but I wouldn’t put myself in a country bucket. It’s that really cool mix of genres that I like playing with.

6.) You hail from the great state of Texas which has brought the world such amazing music talents as Willie Nelson, Janis Joplin, Buddy Holly, Waylon Jennings, and Travis Scott! Do you see yourself as a part of that lineage? And how do those Texas roots inform you as not only an artist, but also as a person?

Sooooo many artists! Beyonce!!! It’s a diverse music scene that’s for sure. You see a lot of artists who mix genres around here because it’s a big state with a lot of different vibes. Look at Post Malone, as an example, I feel like they always come back to the roots of Texas which is inarguably Texas country. My next single, ‘I’m Not Gonna Jump Out of a Plane With You’ is a straight up 80s americana country song.

7.) In the wake of the recent release of your crackling new single Your Parents Don’t Like Me, Can fans look forward to catching you on the touring/performing circuit?

YES! I’m staying more regional for now but I’ll be all over Texas & Oklahoma. We’re working out details now but more to come very very soon!

8.) word ‘round industry campfire has it that your debut album will premiere later this year – Congrats again! Can you give our ever-inquisitive readers a hint or three as to what they can expect and look forward to with this eagerly-anticipated LP?

Of course 🙂 ‘Come of Age’ was easy to write and easy to imagine in my head. There are SOOOO many come of age movies out there and it just clicked. My senior year of high school was really hard. I had just met my biological father, which is an entire other story. Along with that I was dealing with the reality that my life was spiraling with all of these decisions that needed to be made in very specific timelines. Scholarships, college, jobs, money, love, parents, a lingering chemical burn that left me partially bald. When I look back at last year a lot of things could have gone the wrong way for me but my music, along with some much needed therapy and meds, truly led me to my path. ‘Come of Age’ explores it ALL.

9.) You made your debut official showcase at this year’s renowned South By Southwest! Any special memories of that very public debut?

Where to start?! I have few key memories for sure. The one that sticks out the most is handing out my cards to people and stumbling into one of my new favorite bands, Pacific Avenue. I got to watch them front row after just randomly giving them one of my cards. They are out of Australia and honestly, that was the best thing. Getting to meet these artists from around the world. I would have never been able to do that in any other event. It’s what, I feel, makes SXSW so special. You make connections with niche bands across genres and countries.

10.) At the end of the day, what do you hope listeners walk away with after giving Your Parents Don’t Like Me many-a-spin?

BE YOURSELF. Your authentic self is good enough. In-laws, parents, siblings, friends, it doesn’t matter who doesn’t like you as long as the person you’re with likes you and most importantly YOU LIKE YOU.

Also, there is a double standard that exists. We talk about the good girl bringing home a bad boy but you rarely see a good boy bringing home the baddest of bads. I love exploring that dynamic and having fun with the thought that I’m this venomous snake that came in the front door.
