When Game Show Contestants Fail (We All Lose)

Watching a game show can be about playing along. It can also be about seeing how the contestants do. Sometimes, they crush it. That can be exciting. Sometimes…they don’t. On occasion, this can be funny, but that is a narrow bandwidth of a possibility. Mostly, and generally, to me I find it uninteresting at best, frustrating at worst, when game show contestants really fall short.

On, say, Match Game it can be funny because that’s a light show. Gene Rayburn (I default to the ‘70s version in my mind) can make some jokes, and so can the panel. If the bad answer ensures the game is over, then it can still be a little lacking. On Wheel of Fortune, a show I don’t really watch, it’s only annoying when you figure out the puzzle, it seems easy, but nobody is guessing it.

As I’ve watched more (old) Family Feud recently, I’ve realized how disinteresting it is when the winners crash out on Fast Money. When a contestant gives clearly bad answers, I just end up turning it off. Why watch a bunch of zeroes and single-digit numbers pop up? Speaking of checking out, oh man, it’s the worst at the end of Supermarket Sweep when the winners have no clue what the hint is trying to lead them to. It’s so dull and frustrating to watch them meander (meander!) around the supermarket. Yawn.

If you think it’s funny when a contestant blows it on a game show, you’re probably just thinking of some viral clip you’ve seen. By and large, it’s a snooze.
