There is an episode of The Adventures of Pete & Pete wherein the Wrigleys go on a roap trip. That got us thinking about going on a road trip with the cast of a ‘90s Nickelodeon show. Live-action or animated, they were all on the board. For this assessment, we decided four characters from the cast had to be included to fill out the car, and all primary and secondary characters could be considered. No tertiary, one-off characters!
Rocko’s Modern Life and Ren & Stimpy both go right out the window because there aren’t four non-annoying characters on either show. With Salute Your Shorts, that would be too much time with teenagers. Even if we got Mona and Ug in the mix, we’d need two kid characters. Given that we’re considering ‘90s Nickelodeon-related matters in the 2020s, it’s easy to deduce we are adults. Thus, we’re not necessarily looking to spend time with a bunch of kids. We could get by with Clarissa Explains it All, though, because we could abide the Darling parents, Clarissa, and Sam. Just as long as Ferguson isn’t in the mix. He’d be so obnoxious on a road trip.
With Rugrats, we’re one adult short. Stu, Didi, and Drew are a good starting point. However, Angelica’s mom and/or Chuckie’s dad are both no-gos. We might as well circle back to Pete & Pete to think on it. The Wrigleys, Big Pete, and Ellen might be good. Artie would be a bit much, we think. Could we get away with including Miss Fingerwood and Mail Carrier Mona? If we could have them, Don, and Joyce, that would be a good trip, but Fingerwood and Mona might be too tertiary to include. Maybe if Stu Benedict and Sally were together. Then again, they’d probably break up during the trip.
In the end, Doug offered up something. The Funnies, i.e. Doug’s parents, and the Dinks. You know Mr. Dink has a fancy, spacious, and comfortable car. He’s a bit eccentric, but tolerable. Mrs. Dink is chill, and the Funnies are chill. Sure, we’d be the fifth wheel, but we’d enjoy the road trip anyway.
