I remember when I took my first psychology class in college. The professor noted that, while he was early to the game, most of what Sigmund Freud postulated about psychology and the human brain has been dismissed, and in many cases actively disproven. He’s a famous name, but wasn’t really successful in his medium. He came to mind because the NFL Draft just happened, and Mel Kiper Jr. is still on ESPN. Also, he’s still an idiot.
Kiper was the guy who ESPN had on the NFL Draft even before the Draft was a big thing, or before ESPN was a big thing. There he was with his goofy, slicked-back hair and histrionic way of talking. As a kid, he was the guy who did NFL Draft stuff, and I didn’t know enough to know if he was good at his job or not. I mean, he was on TV, I figured he was.
Then, other people started doing NFL Draft stuff. Also, I got older, got smarter, and began to understand football more. Also, I saw Kiper make more and more mistakes. Legitimate mistakes. Not just having a projection on a player that didn’t turn out to be correct, but simply saying things that make no sense. In particular, Kiper has been so enthusiastic about so many quarterbacks that didn’t justify it, and didn’t pan out.
The 2025 NFL Draft on ESPN began with Kiper ranting about Shadeur Sanders being the best quarterback in the class, something effectively nobody else believed. Did he really believe it, or was he just being contrarian? After all his years of ranting and raving, who can say anymore? Also, for what it’s worth, he had to do the NFL Draft remotely in 2022 because he wasn’t vaccinated against COVID-19, if you need further proof the man simply isn’t bright.
Fortunately, ESPN is turning to other Draft analysts more online. Soon, Kiper will hopefully be off television. He was never good at this. He was just the guy ESPN hired and never gave up on. Kiper is a joke. Now that there are actual, talented NFL Draft analysts, that’s become abundantly clear.
