Coffee Grounds Find New Life in Innovative Gym Flooring

A Glasgow-based company has launched what industry observers are calling a significant innovation in sustainable fitness equipment, unveiling gym flooring made with recycled coffee grounds on Earth Day.

Sprung Gym Flooring revealed their new 20mm Java Black Rubber Gym Flooring Tiles, which incorporate approximately 30% recycled coffee husks that would otherwise end up in landfill.

The timing of the Earth Day launch reflects growing consumer demand for environmentally responsible options in the fitness sector, where sustainability has traditionally taken a back seat to performance concerns.

“We’ve been working to find ways to make gym flooring more sustainable without sacrificing quality or performance,” says Richard McKay, CEO at Sprung. “By repurposing used coffee grounds that would otherwise go to landfill, we’ve created a flooring option that is both eco-friendly and highly functional.”

The tiles’ development involved partnerships with local coffee shops to create a supply chain of coffee grounds that would otherwise be destined for waste disposal.

In addition to the environmental benefits, the coffee-infused rubber offers enhanced performance characteristics. Each tile features recycled coffee husks gently infused with rubber granules during the moulding process, delivering a high-performance surface with a subtle aroma of ground coffee.

“The result is a durable, supportive surface designed for a wide range of training environments,” McKay explains.

Emma Thompson, owner of CrossFit Glasgow, was among the first to install the flooring. “Our members have responded incredibly positively to the Java Black tiles. They love knowing their workouts are taking place on an environmentally responsible surface, and many have commented on the improved feel underfoot.”

The flooring has undergone testing to ensure it meets the requirements of commercial gyms, home fitness spaces, and athletic facilities. The tiles are designed for easy installation with interlocking edges and can be fitted in various configurations.

The Java Black Rubber Gym Flooring Tiles are available through the company’s website and select fitness equipment retailers nationwide.

While representing a premium over standard rubber tiles, early interest suggests gym owners and home fitness enthusiasts are willing to invest in sustainable options that maintain performance standards.
