The Overlooked Essentials of Self-Care and Family Well-Being

Self-care and family well-being call to mind focusing on the betterment, health, and overall wellness of yourself and your entire family. While many understand this to mean taking good care of your health, such as getting the right medical treatments or exercising and eating right, in reality, it goes much further than these basic elements. Therefore, to further explore what it means to promote self-care and family wellness, we will outline some often overlooked essentials you won’t want to neglect:

Promote Spiritual Health

One aspect of well-being and self-care is spiritual health. Studies have proven a correlation between spirituality and psychological well-being, and even medical studies have shown a connection between faith and positive health outcomes. Therefore, it stands to reason that one essential part of family well-being and specific self-care is to make your spiritual health a priority. This can mean joining a local group of believers, worshiping on your own, getting educated on various types of religions and spirituality, or finding solace in something that feels spiritual to you. If you grew up in a faith, then recommitting to that foundation of faith can be a great idea, as is getting involved with a local community of believers. If you aren’t familiar with any religion or form of spirituality, this can be a prime opportunity to create a new tradition for your family.

Embrace Companionship

In this society, it can be tempting to try to go at life all on your own. This means that you don’t ask for help when you need direction or encouragement. After all, isn’t the idea to remain fiercely independent and conquer the world? Well, you can try that route, but in general, human beings are created to be in a community or part of a tribe. Therefore, the community should not be an aspect of wellness you take for granted or overlook. Reach out, make plans, take some risks. Yes, you might get rejected by some people, but overall, the more you pour out, the more you will get back in. As many grandmothers used to say back in the day, “you have to be a friend to make a friend.” You will have to approach this purposefully, as it is unlikely that you will create new friendships and communities without trying. Don’t give up if you don’t succeed at first, and remember you can make friends anywhere, at the library, church, local mission, parks, classes, and more.

Open Up Your Home

If you don’t already have a dog or cat, one great way to promote family well-being and enhance your self-care is by opening up your home to a four-legged companion. There are always animals in need of rescue at local shelters, or you can foster dogs until they are permanently placed, giving them the love they need to better adjust to their forever homes. Taking care of a dog can even help you develop positive habits like taking walks. Opening up your home could also include welcoming in two-legged guests as well, providing either a meal or a bed for the night. Again, self-care, though it might seem selfish, is also focused on others, allowing yourself to give to others. To be happy, you have to give of yourself, your home, and your family.

Learn a New Skill

Another way to promote self-care and overall family well-being is by learning a new skill. This can look like taking an art or cooking class, or instead, mean you sign up to take a class at your local community college. If there is a skill you have always wanted to master or a subject that fascinates you, become more educated about the topic and push your boundaries even more. When in school as children, education often seemed arduous, simply something that had to be done. Now, though, when it is voluntary, it can open up a whole new world and help you expand your knowledge base and skill level. This might even allow you to change careers or move further with your current endeavor.

Sleep, Sleep, Sleep

While many know that self-care involves taking care of your body through exercise or even a great beauty routine, an often overlooked essential of any well-balanced life is sleep. Our bodies are designed to need adequate and restful sleep to operate optimally. Experts recommend adults get between 7 and 9 hours of sleep a night. Not getting enough sleep can cause all sorts of issues. Adults who regularly sleep fewer than 7 hours are at greater risk of health issues. If you make good, quality sleep a priority, then you can pass this healthy trait onto your family and encourage them to take sleep seriously too.

Cut Off The Noise, Cut Off The Screens

Years ago, we didn’t walk around with a connection to the outside world constantly at our fingertips. Today, there is so much confusion, noise, and constant stimulation in the form of our phones. Therefore, one great way to promote self-care and family wellness is to cut down on screen time. Instead, get outside, breathe in fresh air, talk as a family, maybe even play a board game. Use your brains to solve problems, go for a drive, and talk. The possibilities are endless, but make sure your screens aren’t taking over your family time and creating a bunch of zombies looking at screens instead of acting as a family should, and promoting interaction.

Know That Self-Care Will Change Overtime

No matter what practices you put into place now for self-care, know that they will have to change over time to encourage continued growth. In addition, not every stage of life is as open as others. There might be years that you can easily host individuals in your home, while other times you simply have too many responsibilities. Give yourself grace and understand that you can only do what you can do. That is also an important aspect of self-care, understanding and honoring your limitations while still pushing yourself to improve in areas. Self-care will always be evolving and that’s to be expected.

Self-Care and Family Wellness: Overlooked Essentials

You cannot pour out of an empty cup, so self-care is crucial to creating wellness for yourself and others. Keep the essentials outlined above in mind when considering how to focus more on self-care. Many of them are overlooked strategies that can make a big difference in your wellness. While exercising, good skincare practices, and eating right are important, there is much, much more you can do to enhance your level of self-care, and then in turn be able to give back to others in entirely new ways, expanding your horizons even more.
