“Who is the favorite to win the N** title?” is one question. “Who would be the coolest team to win it all?” is a different question. That’s the question I will answer right now!
I’m not a fan of bottom seeds winning it all, so if you had to come in through the play-in, you’re out of the running for me. Plus, it’s not like the Warriors winning it all would be all that exciting anyway. The Celtics won last year and have a ton of titles. That wouldn’t be cool at all. While Luka Doncic getting a ring with the Lakers would be interesting, it’s hard to call a team with double-digit titles winning it all “cool.”
Denver won it a couple seasons ago. It was its first title as a franchise, but it won with basically the same roster. The Nuggets winning would be totally fine with me, but they can’t top this list, that’s for sure. Milwaukee won it a few years ago with Giannis, but as with Luka, there’s the Damian Lillard of it all. The Bucks have fewer titles than the Lakers, so for them it would be slightly cooler.
The teams that would qualify as “cool” champs for me are:
Thunder
Rockets
Clippers
Timberwolves
Cavaliers
Knicks
Pacers
Pistons
Of these, I think the Knicks would be the least-interesting, because they have some franchise success in the past. Plus, they are a New York team. It’s hard to get too excited for a New York team most of the time. The Clippers and Timberwolves have never won titles, but both have some players who aren’t “fun” to root for, and Kawhi Leonard has a title from the Raptors days. They would be pretty cool champs! They just don’t win this battle.
The Rockets won two titles in the 1990s, and they have the kind of young team that doesn’t really scream “Finally, they won it all!” So now we’re down to the top four. I’m a Pistons fan, but I can be objective about “cool” factor. They have three titles, one as recently as 2004. The only reason they made it this far is because of the turnaround. They won 14 games last season! They won 44 this season! To go from 14 wins to a ring would be incredible.
That leaves the Cavaliers, Thunder, and Pacers. The Cavaliers have a ring, but they won it with LeBron. To win a title without LeBron James would be so big for the franchise, and also quite cool. The Thunder don’t have a title, but the Seattle Supersonics do. Any lingering resentment about that move is enough for hair splitting. With the Pacers, it’s simple. They’ve never won a title. As the four seed, they are underdogs without being too big of underdogs. It would still feel like an “earned” title.
That being said, in the end, the story for the Cavaliers takes the cake. If the Cavs win the N** title, it will be the coolest result.
