1.) We’re very excited to have some time today with acclaimed Dominican indie Latin pop singer and songwriter Merlis Camilo; greetings and salutations Merlis and thank you for taking time out of a busy schedule to speak with us here at Vents Magazine! Before we meander down the Q&A musical pathway, how is 2025 finding you and yours?
This 2025 has been a year of significant personal and professional growth. I’ve had a lot of work, and I’m grateful to be able to keep doing what I love. My loved ones are doing well. We’ve had our ups and downs, like any family, it’s normal. But overall, it’s been a good start to the year. Thanks for asking!
2.) Major kudos and accolades on your freshly-minted new single Dioses which is lighting up music charts across the ever-lovin’ globe even as we speak! Starting at the top, can you talk about what inspired this powerful and compelling new gem of a ditty?
Thank you so much. ́Dioses ́ is an open door to the future and a mirror that has made me rethink my expectations of success. It shows an alternate life for the Merlis I am today. It’s a song in which I observe what happens to others and learn what I want to experience and what I don’t. It’s about getting to know fame through the eyes of others and seeing what lies behind it.
3.) Who did the producing honors on the Dioses single and what did the in-studio collaboration between artist and producer look like while fashioning and shaping the new track?
Dominican producer Adriano Sang was in charge of the production. Guille, Adriano, and I wrote it together in Guille’s home studio in Santiago, a city near my hometown that I love dearly. It was a song born out of camaraderie, created with friends.
4.) In your humble opinion, what differentiates Dioses from the Distinguished Competition on the 2025 music scene?
Musically, ́Dioses ́ is very pop, it’s a nostalgic look back at the pop music of the ’90s and 2000s, which I absolutely love. Lyrically, I think ́Dioses ́ touches on a topic that not everyone addresses, vanity and the not-so-pretty side of fame, which often goes unspoken. It’s me realizing what I don’t want in my music career.
5.) Word ‘round industry campfire has it that the new single is an opening volley towards
what will ultimately be your eagerly anticipated new EP Ego y Amor; congrats! Can you give audiophiles a hint or three as to what they can expect and look forward to with the upcoming EP?
That’s right! ‘Dioses’ is the first single from ‘Ego y Amor ́, my upcoming EP, which will be released on May 7 across all digital platforms. It’s a musical universe of five songs that are deeply interconnected.
6.) In the wake of the April 7 release of your beautiful new single Dioses, can fans look forward to catching you on the touring/performing circuit?
Yes, I’m currently planning a series of concerts for the last quarter of the year in my home country, the Dominican Republic. And for 2026, we’re planning to head to Colombia, Miami, Spain, and Mexico.
7.) How is the new single Dioses similar to some of your past efforts such as Como Antes? How is it different?
Compared to ‘Como Antes’, ‘Dioses’ shares similarities in some of the melodies and keyboard arrangements. But lyrically, they’re very different. I believe ́Dioses ́ connects more with my earlier phase as an artist, back when I released songs like ́La Canción Más Feliz ́ or ́Me Enamoré ́.
8.) As a respected singer and songwriter, which generally comes first for you during the creative process – The lyrics or the music?
I compose both ways, but most of the time, the melody comes first. The music tends to guide me toward what I need to say.
9.) Who are some of the people both in and out of the world of music who have pushed your own creative needle forward?
My son is a huge source of inspiration for me. My father, may he rest in peace, always motivates me to keep creating and believing in my art. Within music, I have many influences: Alanis Morissette, Rosalía, Pink, The Cranberries… and authors and actresses inspire me as well.
10.) Any final thoughts you might like to share with fans regarding your revelatory new single Dioses?
What I’d truly love is to hear the personal interpretation each listener gives to the song. More than my own meaning, I’d love to understand how these lyrics adapt to their realities.
