Bob Norwood Is Fueled By His Love For Fast Cars and Innovative Builds

Bob Norwood’s name carries heavy weight among automotive enthusiasts, particularly those with a passion for Ferrari and fast cars. Over more than six decades, he has transformed challenges into victories, from overcoming a near-fatal accident in the Mojave Desert to establishing a reputation for cutting-edge engineering.

As the owner of Norwood Exotics in Rockwall, Texas, he continues to innovate and create turbocharge builds for customers who want to push the boundaries of performance and design. His life story is marked by resilience, technical innovation and an unshakeable commitment to excellence

“Success, to me, means finishing a massive project,” Norwood said in a recent interview about his career. “Whether it’s building a custom car or breaking world records, the satisfaction of seeing a complex vision come to life is unparalleled. Additionally, success includes helping others achieve their goals, whether mentoring or just helping others on their projects.”

Early Challenges and an Unbreakable Will

In 1974, Bob Norwood found himself in the unforgiving terrain of the Mojave Desert, where a dirt bike accident changed the course of his life. He was hospitalized for 16 weeks with two broken legs, the loss of his right kidney and a daunting road to recovery.

Stranded in Lancaster, California, Norwood emerged from the hospital 60 pounds lighter and facing the need to relearn how to walk. For many people, such a life-altering event would have sparked uncertainty and despair.

For Norwood, it presented an opportunity to rediscover his sense of purpose.

“It was the moment I realized that the body can heal, and the mind can push you forward,” he shared.

His optimism did not diminish the grind of everyday life.

Determined to recuperate, he moved to Denton, Texas, and stayed with a friend who owned a welding shop. There, he gradually rebuilt his physical strength, welding aircraft seat tubes at a rate of 300 parts per day for one dollar per part. It was repetitive work, yet the pattern of setting a goal and exceeding it every day laid the foundation for Norwood’s future ventures. His sense of discipline and resilience, first honed in a hospital bed, continued to shape him.

In those early years, Norwood’s natural inclination was to solve problems—large or small.

After building a 1965 Corvair with a 455 Oldsmobile front-wheel drive setup in the back, he disguised the transformation with old suitcases to keep it a “sleeper.” He even pushed that build to an impressive 11.50-second quarter-mile time with the help of nitrous oxide. Though a modest precursor to the record-breaking Ferraris he would later engineer, this unassuming Corvair was a testament to his eye for potential and his knack for experimentation.

Discovering the Magic of Ferraris

By 1976, Norwood took a bold leap into the world of Italian exotics. He purchased his first Ferrari, a 330 Series 2, with the intention of modifying it as he had done with his previous cars. True to form, he promptly removed the V12 engine and installed a Ford V8 and automatic transmission.

Yet, while working on this legendary chassis, he began to experience the intangible appeal of Ferrari’s engineering. As he often recalled to close friends, he realized he was dealing with “a different breed of machine.

”People started asking, “Who works on your Ferrari?” and Norwood’s simple reply—“I do”—ignited a new chapter in his life.

Others in Dallas who also admired Ferraris reached out for his expertise. Soon, a group of collectors joined forces to help Norwood establish a dedicated shop near Highland Park. By 1979, the new facility was up and running. It housed four private car collections and was equipped with the latest tools and technology available at the time. The environment was upscale, symbolic of the vehicles it housed, and it gave Norwood the freedom to experiment with innovative builds.

In the early 1980s, Norwood delved deeper into Ferrari restorations, taking on projects such as Cobra kit cars, authentic 1959 Testarossas, and imaginative re-creations like the P4 rebody. He built GTO rebodies, turbocharged 308s, and was soon known throughout the Ferrari community for his unconventional yet masterful approach.

According to those who saw him at work, he was always pushing the envelope, blending meticulous craftsmanship with a racing enthusiast’s sense of adventure.

A Vision for Innovation and Leadership

If there is one theme that has guided Norwood’s career, it is his relentless pursuit of innovation. He has consistently leveraged technology, whether by testing the limits of turbocharging on classic Ferrari engines or exploring modern electronics to refine performance. This commitment to staying ahead of the curve also reflects his leadership style.

In his own words, “Technology: learning about the latest technology in automotive and related fields, mastering and applying them in novel ways. Always trying to stay ahead of the curve.

”This approach helped cement Norwood’s reputation far beyond the Dallas area. Automotive journalists, Ferrari aficionados and even casual car fans have been drawn to the daring exploits of Norwood’s builds. Record-breaking speeds at the Bonneville Salt Flats and a series of head-turning Ferrari replicas, including the 330/P4, have only added to his storied legacy. It was this drive that prompted his decision to relocate Norwood Autocraft to Rockwall, Texas, in 2000, a move that positioned him for the expansion of Norwood Exotics in 2022.

Leading with Heart and Tenacity

Ask any of Norwood’s team members about his leadership philosophy and they are likely to highlight his blend of compassion, practicality and vision. Although he sets ambitious goals, he takes care to ensure each project is achievable within the team’s existing skill set and resources. “I either do what others can’t do, or if it’s something they are interested in learning, I’ll teach them,” he has said, reflecting on how he chooses which tasks to delegate.

His approach to managing interpersonal challenges reflects a calm determination: “Try to assess the problem and the nature of the person,” he advised. “All are different and situation-dependent. I try to sort it out with them as calmly as I can. If things aren’t going well I may bring in a trusted colleague to help negotiate.

”This inclusive culture of mentorship has nurtured rising talent. Norwood often recounts stories of how he motivated younger staff members to tackle seemingly insurmountable projects—like a pair of employees who bought a car to restore and flip, only to realize they were in over their heads. “I shared my knowledge and experience,” he said, “and then encouraged them that they indeed had the skills to tackle it.” Under his guidance, they succeeded, learning not just the technical skills but also the confidence required to face high-stakes challenges.

As for keeping morale high, Norwood believes in the power of unity. “I make it clear throughout that they are part of the team that will accomplish it. They know I’m behind them, they don’t get in ‘trouble’ for mistakes, and we learn from those mistakes.” He believes in celebrating every small victory, whether it is through a lunch gathering or an after-work movie. This balance of discipline, continuous learning and camaraderie is at the core of Norwood’s leadership.

Preserving a Legacy and Inspiring the Future

Today, Norwood stands as a pillar of expertise in the automotive realm, famous for his Ferrari restorations and fast, exotic cars that challenge preconceived notions of what is possible. His workshop, Norwood Exotics, remains a hub of experimentation, fueled by decades of experience and a restless curiosity about emerging technologies.

While many in his position might settle into a well-earned retirement, he still appears more excited than ever to break new ground.

“Kindness, compassion and listening,” he has said, are the most crucial qualities a leader should possess. For Norwood, these attributes have guided him through personal challenges, shaped his business philosophy and helped him cultivate a community of loyal collaborators. He remains the mentor who took the time to weld seat tubes for a dollar apiece, the dreamer who dared to swap a V8 into his first Ferrari, and the innovator who refuses to rest on his considerable achievements. His story continues to be written at every racetrack, shop floor and brainstorming session, promising that whatever the future holds, Bob Norwood will be there. He promises to forge new pathways and inspire those around him to follow their passion and dare to dream big.
