You’ve heard of Mario Kart almost assuredly. It’s a fun game series, the most-popular of any racing game series. A lot of that boils down to the fact you get to play as Mario characters. Also, it’s fun to throw banana peels at cars. Diddy Kong Racing is in the same vein, but is technically a competitor as it is a Rare game. Donkey may be in Mario Kart, but Diddy Kong is from an entirely different world. However, did you know there was another attempt to grab a piece of the character-racing pie starring none other than Woody Woodpecker?
Primarily a PlayStation game, Woody Woodpecker Racing came out in 2000. If it escaped your radar, that’s understandable. The game features nine characters you can pick. Why, all your favorites are there! Aside from Woody there’s Wally Walrus, Smedley, Dapper Denver Dooley, and the rest of the gang. We jest, of course. The world of Woody Woodpecker is not teeming with notable characters, certainly not in the year 2000. Also, the gameplay was mediocre.
What about Garfield, though? In 2013, Garfield got into the Mario Kart space with Garfield Kart. Hey, at least here you have Odie and Nermal. However, you had to unlock those characters, and more. You start with Garfield and Jon, and it’s a single-player game. The fun of Mario Kart is the multi-player of it all.
Sonic, Crash Bandicoot, Shrek (yes, Shrek), the South Park gang, and more have done the kart-racing thing. It’s all an attempt to grab the Mario Kart audience with what these characters bring to the table. Even Muppet RaceMania, which had 25 playable characters, came and went. Oh, and by the way, there have been a few Wacky Races games, and the one from 2000 for PlayStation 2 actually got good reviews. So, it’s not all Mario Kart out there. Sometimes Dick Dastardly delivers.
