Recently I went to a birthday party at a karaoke place. Well, a restaurant that had private karaoke rooms. It was fun. Only a half-dozen of us were interested in actually doing karaoke, and we went down a couple eclectic roads. I did some straightforward stuff, like “One Week” by Barenaked Ladies and “The Humpty Dance” for the sake of humor. Also I did a Taking Back Sunday song to do something from the emo realm. There were a couple songs I did though to perform them in a different style, and I think they both worked out.
First was one that I had in mind before. That would be Natalie Imbruglia’s “Torn.” However, I sang it in the vein of Ian Curtis from Joy Division, which is to say at a low register and somewhat muted in terms of fluctuation in intonation. It landed, and it works conceptually. The only issue is that the karaoke track moves at the pace of the actual song, and that was perhaps a smidge too fast for my plan. If I could have made it a hint slower, I would have.
The second song in question was “You Oughta Know” by Alanis Morissette. I did not head into that song with any particular plan, but it was getting later in the evening. So, I turned it into a scream song. I screamed the chorus, all raspy style, each and every time. It actually turned out quite successful. Maybe it wouldn’t have gone over well in a karaoke bar, but it worked in the room.
So, if you’re ever looking to variate on a theme, karaoke wise, these are now field tested options.
