Wasun – Earth Mother
When I think of artists who stand out for addressing social and political topics my thoughts turn to Marvin Gaye, The Honey Drippers, The Last Poets and Gil Scott-Heron. Public Enemy was the first political Hip Hop group to gain commercial success. Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five released the first sociopolitical rap song in 1982, named “The Message”, which inspired many rappers to address social and political topics. Taking a look at Wasun’s catalogue one can clearly see a Black Panther Party influence throughout his music.
Beginning with the cover of his first album “What Must Be Done” and songs such as “Voices” and “Goldenshower” to his sophomore release “The Prison Notebooks” which has “Fallen Angels” and “Moving Left” as well as Wasun’s 2016 EP “Comrade Music” with tracks like “Central Committee Report” and “More Oppression” to his brand new album “Earth Mother” that carries on his theme with “One Nation” and “Every Cook Can Govern”
“One Nation” which is a protest song regarding the ongoing war between Palestine and Isreal.
“Every Cook Can Govern” which is about a revolution where employees rebel against their employers and take over their perspective industry.
What I dig about Wasun is that he doesn’t overdo it with his political statements and there is a balance of substance on each release including “Earth Mother”
Overall Earth Mother is a great listen which is guaranteed to touch the soul.
