INTERVIEW: Replaced by Robots

1.) We’re super-excited to have some time today with acclaimed Portsmouth-based band Replaced By Robots; greetings and salutations gang and welcome to Vents Magazine! Before we dive into the Q&A mosh-pit, could you all say ‘hi’ and introduce yourselves to our ever-inquisitive readers?

Hello I am Heather Joy Morgan, painter chanteuse, taenzerin, purveyor of absurdity. Hi I’m Adam Wade (Funeral Party) guitar vocals drums and keyboards. I am GOOLKASIAN  (The Elevator Drops & The TexasGovernor).

2.) Major kudos and accolades on the freshly-minted debut EP The Experiment which is lighting up record charts across the ever-lovin’ globe! Can you talk about what inspired this five-track glam fest of raw and unbridled musical energy?

Goolkasian: The Experiment in NOT an EP it is a MINI-ALBUM designed for modern humans with limited attention spans. At the end of the Short ride your senses will be fully satisfied. It’s Chock full of invigorating energy

Adam: In these Zany times we wanted to bring more color light and intelligence to the robotic dance floor of our imagination.

HJM: A lifetime of disillusionment and love. Ha ha ha!

3.) GOOLKASIAN, who did the producing honors on The Experiment and what did the in-studio collaboration between band and producer look like while fashioning and shaping the new EP?

We experimented with a team of experts:

For the first time we got to work with legendary producer Paul Q. Kolderie (Pixies, Dinosaur Jr, Radiohead) who instinctively did a lot of weird things. He pushed the Bass & Guitars to the max, giving this record an undeniably GLAM-era feel and a “Rhythmic Pulse” which drives songs like, All The Lonely Nights.

We worked with Producer and Creative compatriot Josh Hager (Devo, The Elevator Drops), to produce “Are We Falling in Love or Am I Just Losing my Mind?” which is reminiscent of the Buzzcocks, TREX and a million other things but is still, defiantly, its own bird due to the electric and impassioned vocal delivery.

And as always, we Master all our work with the notoriously UNPERSONABLE Terry Palmer who is phenomenal with the Numeric Details Mastering requires. As one might expect, Palmer chooses to hides his accolades.

4.) Heather, we’re big admirers of the tune Since You Broke My Ouija Board which can be found front-and-center on the new The Experiment release! What’s the scoop behind this gem of a ditty?

HJM: I walked into my tarot room and noticed that my treasured, mystical antique for telephoning the spirit world had been gravely mishandled by a total nabob! My banshee rage was only tempered by the grief of such a loss. I walked back into our rehearsal room and the lads were playing such a beautiful melody, my ire transformed spontaneously and immediately into the line “since you broke my ouija board, I can’t talk to the ghosts no more” and we all floated away. Sidenote: Goolkasian is a reckless fellow.

GOOLKASIAN: In my defense, upon later inspection, I noticed the Board was NOT Broken! One of the edges had merely been bent and slightly crumpled.

HJM: The board was kept in perfect condition from 1919 until Goolkasian mashed it into a bag of our gear in 2024.

5.) In your humble opinion what differentiates The Experiment from the Distinguished Competition on the current day music scene?

Goolkasian: We are always experimenting, testing out new sonic combinations and lyrical ideas in an attempt to create music which feels NEW, DIFFERENT and ultimately makes us feel proud.

6.) In the wake of the release of The Experiment, can fans look forward to catching Replaced By Robots on the touring/performing circuit?

Heather: Invite us to your town and give us a stage and we will come! Our performance brings this music to life.

GOOLKASIAN: We follow a strange creative flow. Our goal is not to become a travelling business. I am too busy Living to live on the road, eat gas station hot dogs and hope to sell tshirts. We play when and where we feel inspired to do so. Invitations help

7.) What’s the prognosis on even more amazing music from Replaced By Robots in 2025? Should aficionados keep eyes and ears on the lookout for a possible LP release?

Adam: absolutely ! Although our goal now is to keep peppering you with single releases and contained but brilliant mini-albums.We have no shortage of musical lasers coming your way.

Heather: More, yes and always more! We are ever in the midst of writing and recording, coming up with fine hooks while driving. We are more likely to release these as singles and EPs to guarantee perfection

Goolkasian: In this strange new world everyone’s eyes and ears are bombarded with a steady stream of media begging for attention – I am always thinking there must be a better way to deliver these creative outbursts to the humans. We love the Mini-Albums. We love making Videos. Our Live shows are exhilarating. We will keep creating and scheming of clever ways to get the humans to discover us.

8.) What’s the VH1-Behind the Music origin story on how Replaced By Robots came together to form the rockin’ band which we hear to amazing effect on The Experiment?

Adam: The Chameleons UK spaceship decided to land in Goolkasian and Heathers living room. The event was so spectacular that Gool needed to get me on the phone to check it out. Being a huge elevator drops fan I used my slick mind control to eventually start a collaboration with those two that has proven to be extremely enlightening and fruitful.

Goolkasian: Heather & I had teamed up with Terry Palmer to create, “a dream-pop version” of the Future Islands classic tune “Beach Foam” and thus formed the duo “Lovesick”. We began playing with Adam Wade after the Chameleons show and the musical chemistry seemed to explode. Lovesick were…REPLACED BY ROBOTS

9.) Any final thoughts on the Replaced By Robots mini-album The Experiment that you would like to share with fans and readers alike?

Heather: Want to dance on the edge of the abyss with some fervently obsolete bohemians? Then we have a soundtrack for you.

Adam: Yes. Turn it up loud and dance!

Goolkasian: We have some very heartfelt HUMAN songs in the PIPELINE which I think will surprise people who only know us through this first ep. Elevator Drops fans will understand. Also, a few Neo-New Wave Future Classics.

We love what we do HELP US let the humans hear it.
