When J.J.Abrams and Co. launched LOST lo those many years ago (our handy-dandy pocket calendar tells us it’s been over twenty years gone; we demand a recount), one of the breakout stars among many was rogue Han Solo-like Josh Holloway. As the mysterious grifter known simply as ‘Sawyer’ (or ‘James’ if you really wanted to put him in his place), Holloway exuded the sort of energy that made guys want to grab a beer with him and watch the big game, while women had more amorous intentions. In short, he was a studio executive’s dream come true: A good looking ‘man’s man’ who could also act with the best of them.
Since LOST left the airwaves, one of the many things we’ve truly missed about the series is Holloway’s easy manner and devilish smirk which seemed to host both angels and demons. Fortunately, it appears as if this stalwart thespian is not only set to make a huge and triumphant return as the lead in an upcoming Max series, but he’ll also be reuniting with the creative maestro who gave him his big break on LOST, J.J. Abrams, according to our ‘The Others’ pals on that mysterious island known as The Hollywood Reporter.
Actor Josh Holloway and creative force bar none J.J. Abrams are reuniting on a new ongoing Max series called Duster. The project lands exclusively from Abrams who has been toiling away on it for the past six years alongside other creative gremlins such as LaToya Morgan. The series is set in 1972 and is set to chronicle the first black female FBI agent (essayed by the always brilliant Rachel Hilson) as she does a reverse Johnny Appleseed and strikes out to the Southwest to enlist daredevil getaway driver extraordinaire (that would be Holloway) to their ranks. The end goal? To put a fork in a sinister crime gang which is led by the iconic Keith David.
According to Abrams cohort Latoya Morgan, she instantly sparked to the idea when Abrams laid it out for her.
“He told me that he had this image in his head that he had for about 20 years of a scene that’s in the pilot of a car racing towards a pay phone in the middle of the desert,” explained Morgan of that initial meeting between her and the Star Wars visionary. “When he told me that idea, it just sparked something, and we just started pitching ideas.”
As for Holloway’s involvement in the series, Abrams apparently had his former LOST star in mind as the lead all along: “I called him five years ago to say, ‘Would you ever want to do a show where you play a driver for some kind of criminal organization?’ And he’s like, ‘Yeah.’ So the whole time we were writing this, it was always with Josh in mind. He’s someone I just love working with. And with age, I think he’s gotten even more comfortable with his wry swagger and toughness, and also vulnerability and being unsure of himself.”
Duster is set to make its Max premiere sometime in 2025.
