Swift ‘Simpsons’ Summaries: “I Married Marge”

In season two of The Simpsons, we got the flashback to Homer and Marge’s meeting and the beginning of their romance. The next step happened in season three. This time around, we get the story of Homer and Marge’s marriage in, well, “I Married Marge.”

As Marge deals with a trip to the doctor due to a worry she may be pregnant again, Homer tells their kids the story of Bart’s birth, but also of Homer and Marge’s marriage. Those two are intertwined. It’d be weird if they weren’t if they were going to be part of this story. Basically, Homer and Marge are chilling and Homer is enjoying his job at a mini golf course. Then, after the two have sex on the course, Marge finds out she’s pregnant. Cut to: Homer and Marge having a quickie wedding in a Vegas-esque chapel and Homer looking for a job that can support a family.

In a genuinely emotional story beat, Homer leaves Marge with the goal of finding work to support her and their child. When Marge finds out he’s working at a fast food restaurant, they reconnect. Then Homer gets his gig at the power plant, Bart is born, etc. You know, all the stuff that is canonical in the show. After all the sweetness, the show ends with a joke to keep it from feeling sappy. Marge comes home, says she isn’t pregnant, and she and Homer high five in excitement.

While “I Married Marge” isn’t quite on the level of the story of Homer and Marge meeting, or the story of Maggie’s birth, it’s still a good episode. It just kind of fades into the background a bit because of those two episodes. Maybe give it a watch sometime. It’s good!
