INTERVIEW: NYC Pop Kyle Waves

1.) We’re very happy to have some time today with acclaimed NYC queer pop artist Kyle Waves; greetings and salutations Kyle and welcome to Vents Magazine! Before we meander down the Q&A musical pathway, how is the New Year finding you and yours?

Thank you for having me! It’s been good, I think I’ve really tried to hit the ground running this year, so it’s been busy but also very productive so far!

2.) Major kudos and accolades on your freshly-minted new single “I Feel Too Much For You” which is set to light up record charts across the ever-lovin’ globe when it debuts on February 28th! Starting at the tip-top, can you talk about what inspired this infinitely danceable new tune?

Thank you. I sort of spent last year trying out a lot of different sounds musically to figure out where I wanted to end up and what felt the best. I realized I enjoyed doing dancey, upbeat tracks the most and so I wanted to explore that more. With this song in particular, I was thinking a lot about attraction and the cheekier side of that and so the overall tone of the song and the melody really came from that exploration of my own personal experiences.

3.) Who did the producing honors on the “I Feel Too Much For You” single and what did the in-studio collaboration between artist and producer look like while fashioning and shaping this gem of a ditty?

I actually produced the track myself when I was on vacation last year, which was interesting because I didn’t have access to a lot of the tools I typically do. The track is on the simpler side because of that which really allowed me to play around with cool ways to use my voice, like chopping it up to create an instrument.

4.) In your humble opinion, what differentiates “I Feel Too Much For You” from the other distinguished competition on the 2025 music scene?

I haven’t heard a lot of tracks that sound like it really. I think the dancey groove combined with the cheekily suggestive lyrics, whilst still having a kind of longing undertone in the melody throughout is an interesting combination.

5.) Word ‘round industry campfire has it that, hot on the heels of the February 28th release of your new single, a companion music video for“I Feel Too Much For You” will drop on March 12; congrats again! How involved were you in the overall look and aesthetic of the new video?

I was actually really involved in the whole video process this time because I wanted to try my hand at self-directing, which is something I never attempted on previous music videos. I came up with the concept and aesthetic in my mind when the song was coming together. It was also cool to have complete free range on the look of the video as well as the shots and the editing. I think being so hands on with this video has given me a lot more insight into the video process for my future collaborations.

6.) You were born in Singapore and now hang your fedora in New York City! How do those seemingly disparate roots inform you as not only an artist, but also as a person?

Growing up in different places around the globe has given me a pretty broad view of the world and I’ve had the chance to meet and be friends with people from many different walks of life. I’d like to think I’m more accepting and understanding because of it. I think as an artist I pull a lot of inspiration from asian culture across the board both sonically and visually because that’s what I grew up with and loved, genres like K-Pop and C-Pop really inform my visual aesthetics and how I want to present my art to the world.

7.) In the wake of the release of your new single“I Feel Too Much For You,” should fans keep their eyes and ears open for even more musical goodies from you as the year marches on, perhaps in the form of an EP?

Yes! I’m currently hard at work on a follow-up single as well as an EP later in the year. This track is just the start!

8.) What does your touring/performing dance card look like in the coming weeks and months?

I’ve been talking to some other musicians about doing some joint performances and we’re trying to work out the logistics of that at the moment. If we can get that moving, I’m definitely going to be performing a lot of choreographed songs which I hope people will enjoy. I’m also thinking ahead to an EP listening party and some live performances to go along with that.

9.) Who are some of your key influences both in and out of the world of music?

Musically, I’m really influenced by Troye Sivan, Tinashe, and Lexie Liu. I just love the way they combined their music with fun choreography and very strong and unique visual concepts. I’d actually say Keke Palmer is my biggest influence in life right now! Just in the way she carries herself and how much of an all-round talent she is whilst also being very level-headed and down to earth. It’s very inspiring to me and I’ve been trying to go through my life like that more and get into a similar mindset.

10.) At the end of the day, what do you hope folks walk away with after giving many-a-spin to your captivating new single “I Feel Too Much For You”?

For anyone that listens I hope the song is relatable, we’ve all probably had a crush on someone and thought about the fantasy of being with them, even when we can’t. It’s a strange feeling because it’s so fun but also very bittersweet. At the end of the day if you can understand the meaning, and dance and sing your heart out to it, I’m happy.
