Robert Zemeckis was responsible for two of the biggest blockbusters of the 1980s. His career was made – the proverbial blank check written – by Back to the Future, which of course had two hit sequels. Then, there was Who Framed Roger Rabbit, a movie that took an obscure novel and turned it into a massive cultural event. That’s basically the only place Roger Rabbit exists, and yet he’s a recognizable cartoon character even today. What if Zemeckis decided to join those worlds? We envision a little something called Roger Rabbit to the Future.
Eddie Valiant is killed on the job, much to Roger’s dismay. Who Framed Roger Rabbit is set in 1947, and the events in the past in Back to the Future take place in 1955. Let’s say Eddie is killed in 1955. We’ve jumped forward a few years. Roger, bereft, has left Toon Town, and he finds himself in Hill Valley. When? During one of the times the DeLorean was back there, of course. Through classic Roger Rabbit chicanery, he ends up in the DeLorean and travels back in time. Realizing what the car can do, he sets out to save Eddie. Of course, hilarity ensues. Mistakes happen. Roger and Eddie end up traveling all through time, one imagines. The car has to get back to Toon Town, of course. Imagine seeing Toon Town of the past, or of the future.
Granted, if this was to be done now, Eddie Valiant would have to be recast. Well, everybody would have to be recast. Even Christopher Lloyd can’t pull off Doc Brown anymore. Maybe Thomas Wilson can do old Biff. Or, Zemeckis can just get a time machine. Either works for us.
