There’s a lot of intrigue in the college football season, but some cool stories may be under the radar. For example, what Jerry Kill has done at New Mexico State. The Aggies are going to go to a bowl for the second time in as many years under Kill, and the team has already beat the 7-6 record they had in 2022. That’s impressive, because New Mexico State has had limited success at football. Just how limited? Well…this limited.
New Mexico State’s football team has had as futile an existence as any program. The Aggies won the Quick Lane Bowl in 2022, and in 2017 they also went 7-6 and then won a bowl game. Hey, two bowl wins in six seasons. Not too shabby. So, what happened before 2017? Well, 2017 was the first time they had a winning record since 2002. They did not go bowling that year. Prior to 2017, the Aggies had not been in a bowl since 1960.
Think about that. Over 50 years without a bowl. That was the school’s first year as New Mexico State. Before that, it was New Mexico A&M. The Aggies went bowling the year prior, and then to find their next winning season you have to go back to 1938.
So yeah, what Jerry Kill has done with New Mexico State is truly remarkable, and that’s a cool story.
