To this point, there have been Simpsons episodes where I can go, “Okay, the pieces of the classic run of the show are visible here.” There have been good episodes, and promising episodes, but no standout episodes. That changes here. “Dancin’ Homer” is a standout episode. It’s just straight-up really good.
This is, of course, the episode where Homer because a baseball mascot. It’s of the “Homer gets a new job for one episode” ilk. Of course, this still being early in the show, they justify the come-and-go of it all a bit more than later in the show’s run. I remember an episode that hung a lampshade on this. We get the Capital City Goofball. Hell, we get Capital City. Plus, the song about Capital City. I remember that flooring me as a kid, comedically speaking.
The episode is sensible in scale, but still cartoonish and comedic in a wonderful way. It’s fun. It’s breezy. It doesn’t have the punch, the edge, or the hilarity of some of my favorite episodes, but “Dancin’ Homer” is a real joy to watch. It’s not an all-time great, but it’s better than most episodes of The Simpsons, and therefore better than most episodes of most TV shows.
