I will give M. Night Shyamalan credit for one thing, and that thing is putting his own money behind his films. He bets on himself to make the movies he wants to make. Also, they are often semi-original stories. When they are adaptations, they aren’t I.P.-driven like, say a movie about Barbie or Mario. That is what I have to say about Shyamalan that is positive. Anyway, I’m here to say he has made zero good movies.
Now, I haven’t seen Trap, which looks stupid and bad and has gotten middling reviews. There is no getting me to see a Shyamalan movie at this point. He’s made a few bad movies. People liked Old, but Old is dumb as hell. Most people agree that, say, The Happening sucks. Signs is somewhat polarizing. Obviously, I don’t like it. Truly, I don’t think he has made a single good film.
That means the elephant in the room is The Sixth Sense. This was the first of his films I ever saw, and the same is likely true for you. It has a notable twist, a successful twist even. A good twist does not a good movie make. All in all, The Sixth Sense is a snooze. It drags so much. There’s a bunch of gross stuff just for the sake of it. It’s banally spooky. The eeriness doesn’t work. The Sixth Sense is not an effective movie. It is his best movie, but it’s also, like, a C+.
So yeah, you do you Night. I won’t be tuning in. I have no reason to. The guy has been making films for 20 years and is batting zero.
