I’m not enthused that the Philadelphia Eagles won the Super Bowl. They were in the Super Bowl a couple years ago, and they won the Super Bowl not all that long ago. It wasn’t terribly interesting from a storytelling perspective. However, the Eagles beat the Chiefs, and for that I am enthused.
I don’t like dynasties in sports. I loathe the notion of a team winning three titles in a row. That is what Kansas City was trying to do. All the key pieces were still around, or at least most of them. The quarterback and the head coach are still around, and honestly that carries most of the “Is this team still the same team?” weight for whatever reason.
The Chiefs winning would have been disappointing. They didn’t win. In fact, they didn’t threaten to win. While the game ended 40-22, a comfortable Eagles win, at one point they were up 34-0. The Chiefs scored a couple touchdowns late to make things look better for them. In the history books, it won’t look like KC got blown out. Those of us who watched the game will know better.
Philly winning is fine. The halftime show was a shrug. Most of the commercials sucked. The Chiefs lost, though, and it was in a game with a lot of big plays. That’s good. That’s fun. That’s a positive note to end the 2024 season on.
