INTERVIEW | ViennaCC discusses his brand new music video “Club Mirage”

Global musician ViennaCC recently sat down with VENTS Magazine and opened up about his new track “Club Mirage”

Can you walk us through the writing and production process for “Club Mirage?” What unique elements did you incorporate into this song?

I usually first write the lyrics and then the music. A vision stirred within me – a song dedicated to a mythical music club, a place where reality blurs and fantasy reigns. I sought the perfect word to capture this fleeting, otherworldly essence, and “mirage” appeared, expressing illusion. The music I envisioned was no gentle lullaby but a tempest of sound. I longed for beats that throbbed with power, a danceable force that would compel bodies to move in a imagined nightly event.

The lyrics in “Club Mirage” offer commentary on constant entertainment and social technologies — what motivates you to tackle societal issues in your songwriting?

I merely paint the world as I see it. In this vast landscape, in the lyrics I call it “cultural bazar”, of social media and countless events, Vienna’s club scene is rich and we have gothic and steampunk events. Yet, amidst the multitude of options, the heart of my song lies in this truth: there are countless events, but for me, there is only one true destination – the Club Mirage.

How important is it for you to craft music that is energetic and lively? How would you describe your sound and artistic style?

I draw inspiration from both traditional songwriting and modern production techniques. For me, the melody is paramount. A great song should be versatile enough to be performed with an acoustic guitar or by an orchestra. My productions are characterized by a heavy bass, which adds thickness and depth to the sound. Balancing the kick drum and bass so that both are audible, despite sharing the same frequency range, is always a challenge. The vocals are also crucial; the lyrics must be clear and easy to follow, so I mix the vocals prominently over the instruments, ensuring they don’t overshadow them. I have a penchant for hard-hitting drums, and even in slower songs, I use a powerful kick drum.

Talk to us a little bit about directing your own music videos. What motivates you to craft music videos with a steampunk aesthetic?

I have a fondness for steampunk attire, and we occasionally have venues hosting gothic and steampunk events. Regarding the production process, I start by cutting the footage, ensuring that it aligns with the lyrics to visually represent what I’m singing about, often syncing cuts with the beats. After that, I record myself in front of a green screen, then extract my figure and integrate it into the video.

How did you bring “Club Mirage” to life in the music video? What visual elements stand out to you?

To portray Club Mirage as a steampunk haven, I feature individuals adorned in steampunk attire against a dark backdrop. There are also nocturnal street scenes with steampunk vehicles. I align the visuals with the lyrics: when I sing about experimental theater and jazz, deeming them for upper class model students, I show a theater scene with actors dramatically sprawled on the floor, followed by a jazz band, and then students in a university setting. Another example is when the lyrics mention a doyen and a rising star; I depict an elderly showmaster on stage alongside a young girl. To draw attention to these figures, I make the surrounding footage black and white, highlighting only the doyen and the rising star in color. The goal is for the music and video to create a seamless and cohesive experience.

How do you hope your listeners and viewers react to the video’s vibrant imagery?

Haha, I hope they like it. My video already is on YouTube playlists.

What do you hope audiences take away from the song and video?

Embrace my message: have a good time and no stress. Go out and live your life to the fullest. Enjoy music – especially mine, I hope – and savor every moment.

How does “Club Mirage” reflect your musical direction and aspirations in the future? What projects do you hope to work on next?

My goal is to create songs with captivating melodies and engaging lyrics. I infuse my lyrics with a positive message: enjoy life and keep stress away. I embrace a Bohemian lifestyle, where art is at the core of my existence. I highly recommend living life this way. Remember, only James Bond lives twice – that’s my twist on YOLO.
