The Mystery Science Theater 3000 folks are streaming episodes on YouTube all the time, and many episodes are available to watch on demand. Not every episode, though. The rights to certain films are no longer in their hands, and so they can’t legally screen those. Sure, every episode is still available in “wink, wink” fashion, but you have to watch somebody’s rip of a VHS recording from back in the “Keep circulating the tapes” days. In 2024, though, a classic MST3K episode was able to make a Turkey Day Marathon appearances thanks to reclamation of screening rights. I’m talking of The Final Sacrifice.
The Final Sacrifice is a season-nine episode many fans of the show consider an all-timer. If you don’t know off the top of your head, it’s the Rosdower episode. The movie is a slice of silly Canadian magic that lends itself to many great riffs. Plus, it’s a 1990 movie, so it feels fresher than many a riffed film.
Evidently, though, The Final Sacrifice was made as a school project for a Canadian film student. Yes, a guy who was still in college directed this feature-length movie, which is remarkable for a college freshman. It also may speak to the director Tjardus Greidanus not wanting to let MST3K to have the rights to his school project to air. Not every director is Rick Sloane.
However, it shook out, The Final Sacrifice was back in the mix, and the episode was a delight to watch over the Thanksgiving weekend. Kudos, Greidanus. Kudos, Rosdower.
