The thing about throwing Mystery Science Theater 3000 streams on in the background is I have been getting a lot of repetition. Sometimes I will think to myself, “I’ve had this one on too recently” and I will turn it off. Others, though, I still leave on while I work. My assessment of the show has been changing and crystallizing through this process, and now I think I have a short that is my new favorite. Every time it is on, I keep it on in the background. Which is maybe surprising, given that it’s one of the longest shorts. That would be “Young Man’s Fancy.”
Now, “Young Man’s Fancy” is not a name that tells you what it is about, like “Chicken of Tomorrow.” It’s the lengthy one about all the appliances in the kitchen. You know, Judy’s brother comes back from college and brings his friend Alexander Phipps with him and she’s all squishy. Thus, she sets out to impress him…by cooking.
The short is so weird and over the top, but what really works is that the riffs are cooking. Mike, Kevin, and Trace are all doing a great job and the writers were killing it on that one. It’s rife with sex jokes, sure, but none of them are cheap. The whole thing is delightfully funny. Judy, beyond thundersquishy.
“Young Man’s Fancy” seems to pop up two-or-three times a week, but I always keep it on. Sometimes, I even watch it for a few minutes. It’s just that good.
