There is value in “Three Men and a Comic Book.” Is that value in the story? The comedy? Nope! It’s in the way it shaped the layout of the Simpsons’ household.
Bart, Milhouse, and Martin (a choice built out of the show still finding its footing) join forces to buy the first issue of “Radioactive Man.” Immediately they get greedy about it and they end up ruining the comic. It’s a little Treasure of the Sierra Madre. All that matters, though, is that room in the house.
Literally I Googled “That one room in the Simpsons house” and it came up. This room is the Simpsons’ “rumpus room.” It has appeared fewer than a half-dozen times. Most prominently it shows up in “Three Men and a Comic Book.” Homer is keeping an eye on the boys in the treehouse from this room. There’s a TV and a couple chairs, including a beanbag chair. Figuring out where it fits in the geography of the house is tricky.
For Simpsons fans, the rumpus room is part of the lore of the show, the family, and the house. “Three Men and a Comic Book” is fine as an episode, but it did give us the rumpus room, and that’s worth something.
