I was on the Wikipedia page for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and then looked at the assorted category tags. One of them was “Films Set in 2024.” Now, for such a film that is fully not worth noting. What struck my curiosity, though, was whether or not any films had used 2024 as a futuristic year for their films. They sure have!
Apparently two of the Underworld movies are set in 2024. That’s near future for those movies, but that still counts. Something like, say Black Widow is not really notable at all. That movie came out in 2021. Apparently a bunch of that Marvel stuff was happening in the near future? I wasn’t really tracking that, I’ll be honest.
The funniest by far, though, is Highlander II: The Quickening. Not just because it is a Highlander movie, and a bad one at that, but because The Quickening is one of those famed movie subtitles. It’s up there with Electric Boogaloo in terms of being referenced in jokes.
Evidently back in 1991, 2024 served as the far-flung future for Connor MacLeod and company. By the way, 2025 is the year that Hot Tub Time Machine 2 and Timecop 2 are both set in. Get excited for that.
