Listening To Old Music That Is New Music

I did listen to a new few albums in 2024. Waxahatchee, for example. Ogbert the Nerd, for another. Mostly, though, 2024 was a year where the “new” music I listened to was older music.

There was a lot of revisiting of artists I hadn’t listened to in a bit in 2024, such as The Get Up Kids and Magnetic Fields. Jangle pop and jangle rock was the name of the game for me. I got into spinning Tallulah Gosh, Dear Nora, Cub, and more. There were already bands in that space I listened to, such as Miracle Legion, The 6ths, and The Pastels, and all this listening also probably paved the way for Spotify throwing more Magentic Fields my way. As opposed to The Get Up Kids, which I sought out.

In terms of uptick, though, Rainer Maria led the way. I had, technically, listened to a couple of their songs before, but they were one of my five most-played bands in 2024. One of their songs, “Breakfast of Champions” was my most-played song of the year.

Now, there is a caveat with my sheer tonnage music data. I host trivia, and I have to put together playlists for trivia. We’re talking four hours of playlists a week. By this point, there’s a lot of using a different song by the same artists much of the time. I don’t double up on artists on any playlist, so a lot of my favorites appear every week, and some bands appeared most weeks for both of my shows. Rainier Maria was one of those bands. Also, one day I did decide to go on a kick of listening to them and listened to, I think, three albums. That was enough to push the band into the top five, up there with true-blue favorites like Pavement and Joyce Manor. I do really like Rainier Maria, but they were a real trivia night staple. “Breakfast of Champions” was their first song I found, and so for a bit it was the only one I played until I decided to dig in further.

I don’t remember the last time I listened to so little new music in a year, but I listened to more music than ever this year.
