I was watching one of the college football conference championship games, though I can’t recall which one. Whichever game Joe Tessitore was calling. I remember that much because of something he said. He was talking about the 12-team college football playoff, brand new to FBS football. Tessitore noted that the top four seeds, the ones that get byes, only go to conference champs. He said that is something that surely by next year will be changed because everybody wants that. Well, I don’t . I think changing it would actually be dumb. If four teams are going to get byes, they should be conference champs.
What, exactly, is the point of conferences if winning a conference doesn’t earn you something of substance? You could ensure every conference champ a spot in the 12-team playoff, but to what end? A team could not play in its conference title game and get a bye. Having byes earned through regular-season success makes sense.
Sure, in this instance the four seed is not as good of a team as the five seed. Arizona State isn’t as good as Texas. It also isn’t as good as Penn State, Notre Dame, and on and on. I don’t care. The Sun Devils won the Big 12 and got themselves the four seed. If they aren’t so good, Texas (or Clemson, the 12 seed) will beat them and all will be fine. The Longhorns lost to Georgia, the two seed, in the SEC title game. Now, they are fifth. That tracks.
This is a concrete way for teams to earn a bye. You win a conference, and you maybe get a bye. This isn’t the college basketball tournament. It’s football. Maybe Tessitore is sure everybody feels like him, but I don’t, because in my opinion he and his cohort want to make the playoff worse, and the regular season worse. Personally? I don’t like the idea of doing that.
