How soon is too soon for Hollywood to swoop in with a dramatization of an infamous and unsolved murder mystery involving a 6-year-old girl? Though JonBenét Ramsey was taken so violently from this world nearly 30 years ago, for many of us the memory of the media circus which ultimately steered this very Cold Case into nearly unsolvable waters feels just like yesterday. Time does march on, however, and with a significant period of time now elapsed since this heinous murder, the entertainment industry is ready once again to dip their big toe into these already murky waters. Let’s hope they don’t make matters even more confused and distorted with this new and controversial effort.
From The Hollywood Reporter comes the news that top Hollywood actors Clive Owen and Melissa McCarthy have been cast as John and Patsy Ramsey, the parents of JonBenét Ramsey, the youngster murdered in her own home by an unknown predator in the Boulder, Colorado of 1996.
Brought to viewers by Paramount+, the new limited series officially has a moniker as of today: Unspeakable: The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey. The streaming service announced the upcoming true-life ‘Whodunnit?’ during the 2025 presentation of awards ceremony The Golden Globes where one-half of the headlining duo – Melissa McCarthy – was on hand as a presenter. Depending on your threshold for spectacle, this move was either the shrewdest and most high-profile way for Paramount+ to receive some free publicity for the series, or it’s one of the ickier publicity ploys in recent memory for using a little girl’s death to push a studio’s big-budgeted production; As we say, individual mileage does vary.
Speaking of all things official, here’s the certified and official logline for Paramount+’s Unspeakable: The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey: “At its heart, the series centers on the story of Patsy and John Ramsey, exploring their unbreakable partnership and the complex dynamics of their marriage and parenting. It delves into how they crafted a narrative of a perfect, privileged life for themselves and their children — a facade shattered by tragedy one Christmas night in 1996.”
As noted at the tip-top, the JonBenét Ramsey murder mystery has long been considered cold. Recently, however, a slew of new information has come out about the case, spearheaded by John Ramsey (Patsy Ramsey passed away after losing a battle with cancer back in 2006) and the recent Netflix docuseries Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey, has inspired a reexamination of what we know about the case as well as a concerted push to sift through whatever DNA evidence still exists from the murder. The hope among many, including John Ramsey, is that the advances made in the nearly thirty years since it was last looked at might finally bring some long-needed closure on this vexing and horrifying case.
There’s no official release date for the Paramount+ miniseries Unspeakable: The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey, but we’ll keep you posted as soon as we have something to share!
