The first Aquaman film starring Honolulu, Hawaii native Jason Momoa was a rare win at the box-office both critically and commercially for the dark-tinged Zack Snyder vision of the cinematic DC Universe. Momoa didn’t become the undersea monarch hero so much as he flat-out succumbed and gave every fiber of his being into a role he was clearly destined to play. Though visually a complete opposite of the DC Comics version of the character which has been appearing off and on since creators Mort Weisinger and Paul Norris first introduced him back in a 1941 issue of More Fun Comics, it really didn’t matter at the end of the day: Momoa did not need to be a spitting image of blond haired, blue-eyed adventurer Arthur Curry to sell audiences; it was simply enough that he seemed to capture that certain indefinable something which separates the mere character actor from the vaunted ranks of the movie star. So, with boffo box-office for the first film and a nice reception for his character in several other DC films, it was all but inevitable that an Aquaman 2 would happen. Sadly, the film had the misfortune of arriving D.O.A. as far as Warner Bros. Discovery Big Wheels were concerned. Plans had already been put in motion to reboot the DC characters on the silver screen by James Gunn and Peter Safran, and the middling to poor box-office return on the sophomore film certainly did not bolster any argument to at least keep good ol’ Momoa’s Aquaman swimming around in the waters of a new and shared superhero universe. Luckily for Jason Momoa fans, the actor has been tapped to return to the DC big screen, though not as Aquaman…
From our Justice League International fans over at The Hollywood Reporter comes the news that actor Jason Momoa has been tapped to portray no-nonsense alien bounty hunter Lobo in the upcoming feature film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
The move from Warner Bros. Discovery in casting Momoa comes after a long and ultimately successful campaign from the actor himself to play a character created by comic book luminaries Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen in 1983. The character of Lobo has gone on to become something of a cult favorite among readers, leading to innumerable guest appearances in other character’s titles, as well as having cultivated a whole slew of mini-series and ongoings himself. As for Momoa’s passion for taking on this role, no need to question that, Dear and Constant Reader: Today Momoa posted a quote from himself where he conveyed some time back that he hoped the Big Wheels at DC and Warner Bros. would call him regarding the part of Lobo. For his caption above the quote today, Momoa cheekily said “They called.”
Welcome back to the fold, Jason Momoa!
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will star Milly Alcock as the titular heroine and marks the first solo outing Superman’s cousin has received theatrically since the Helen Slater Supergirl film from 1984. That film was a disappointment at the box-office, but you can’t keep a good Kryptonian down: Since that first film, Supergirl has appeared in numerous comic books, TV shows and animated adventures.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will fly into theatres on June 26, 2026.
