Musical Chairs: Upcoming “The Batman” Sequel Faces Delays, Shifts Release Date with Mystery Tom Cruise Project

There’s nothing new under the sun when it comes to Hollywood and production delays on high-profile films. If you’re looking for a good example of this common phenomenon, look no further than one of the bigger examples to amble down the pike in some time, James Cameron’s break-the-bank epic Titanic. Originally set for a July 4 of 1997 release, the sheer magnitude of Cameron’s painstaking undertaking forced nervous studio executives to push the movie to a December 19, ‘97 premiere instead. At first this delay was seen by some Nervous Nellie’s as blood in the proverbial water for the Terminator director as well as his youthful and mostly unknown cast which included the likes of Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio. Surely this bank-busting motion picture would sink at the box-office, dooming any and all talent associated with it. Of course, that bit of doomsday talk never happened: Titanic went on to break all box-office records, ultimately cleaning up at the Oscars and crowing Cameron and his young stars as ‘kings of the world.’ The above example is one which anxious moviegoers and box-office pundits should keep in mind when considering this bit of news which is coming out of Hollywood today…

From our ‘steady as she goes’ pals over at The Hollywood Reporter comes the news that the eagerly-anticipated follow-up to director Matt Reeves’ The Batman starring Robert Pattinson as the titular caped crusader has been delayed. Originally, the Warner Bros. film was meant to land in theatres in 2025. That release date has been delayed, to say the least, until October 1, 2027, after a brief glimmer of hope by the Big Wheels at Warner’s that it might be ready for release in October of ‘26. Those hopes, too, have been dashed. Instead of Bruce Wayne and good ol’ Gotham City, moviegoers will be treated to the top-secret and as of yet untitled Tom Cruise film being shot by famed director Alejandro González Iñárritu. Mark your calendars for that one, kiddies: October 2, 2026.

As for The Batman II, production on this reimagining of one of DC Comics most iconic heroes isn’t expected to even begin shooting now until the third quarter of next year.

For anyone keeping score with how precisely The Batman II falls in line with the rest of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted DC Cinematic Universe, fear not: Much like the recent Joker sequel, The Batman II is meant to take place separately from the universe which Gunn and Safran are crafting. That being said, both men will be keeping an eye on the new Batman outing and offering their own valuable input.

The Batman II crashes into movie theaters on October 1, 2027.
