Formed at the beginning of 2024, Phantom Sugar was born from a nostalgic haze by musician and songwriter Stevie Zita. A longing for getting back to a raw indie sound which shaped and molded the early 00s, their sound stems from Zita’s time spent in Toronto moving from one community to the next. Steps on the concrete, different cuisines in the air, loud conversations flying by, all the aspects of a busy city. Stevie took this energy of 2024 and fashioned it into his debut EP, HABITUAL. A project that showcases exchanging guitars, heart thumping rhythm section, topped off with crooning vocals, HABITUAL brings a new yet comfortable spin to Lo-Fi Indie Rock.
“I feel like this sort of EP was always in me and I’m just getting it out now,” Zita reflects. “I’ve always been drawn to the hazy pop sounds of the early 00s and this was almost like a fantasy to create a band in my head and execute it in this way.”
Today, alongside the release of the full HABITUAL EP, Phantom Sugar is highlighting the track “PUNCH DRUNK.”
“The songs all originally stem from a heartbreak and the isolation that came along with it, but it was important for me to sonically represent this theme in a raw upbeat fashion. The idea of keeping everything to a simple rock set up but still experimenting was the main focus and goal for this project. Dipping back into my earliest inspiration and revitalizing the garage jam sessions that made me the musician I am.”
