Ladies and gentleman and movie fans the world over…Prepare to start your awards-fueled engines!
Though the annual Academy Awards is still four months away, movie distribution house NEON has decided to strike while the iron is hot and the memory of their eerie little supernatural thriller Longlegs still lingers in moviegoer’s darkest nightmares. Thus, according to our pals over at Bloody Disgusting, has begun their official entry into the world of Oscar campaigning, that odd and, yes, brutal Hollywood tradition which allowed a lesser light such as Shakespeare In Love to walk away with the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1999 while the far superior Saving Private Ryan was left to nurse its wounds.
For anyone that may have missed it, Longlegs starred Maika Monroe (It Follows) as a dogged FBI agent in pursuit of a deranged serial killer (Nicolas Cage of Pig fame) who leaves behind a trail of victims. Directed by Osgood Perkins, Longlegs invited some valid comparisons to such classic thrillers as Silence of the Lambs and Seven. Whether you agree with those assessments is moot by this point; the film raked in an astonishing $109 million smackers across the movie-lovin’ globe off of a miniscule budget, ensuring talks of a potential sequel and inspiring a wave of upcoming films with similar premises.
NEON made the Oscar race for 2024 interesting indeed when they announced today that they were launching an honest-to-Pete ‘For Your Consideration’ Oscar push for their horror film Longlegs. And the fine folks at NEON aren’t hedging their respective bets on their race for Oscar gold: The campaign is for all categories, meaning that this is one flick which will be paying its respect to all aspects of its creation.
NEON is fishing for Academy Award nominations for the following Longlegs alums: Osgood Perkins (for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay), Maika Monroe (Best Actress), Nicolas Cage (Best Supporting Actor), Blair underwood (Best Supporting Actor), and Alicia Witt for Best Supporting Actress.
Of course, as pointed out above, the Oscars aren’t being held until March and there’s many-a slip ‘twixt a cup and a lip, so it will be interesting to witness what sort of competition Longlegs and the magic makers over at NEON will be facing as the studios gear up their award-worthy offerings this holiday season; stay tuned, True Believers!
