Nire Bird Unveils Dark-Pop-Tinged Debut Album You Made Me Not The Same

Since debuting in 2019, Nire Bird has been pushing the boundaries of dark-pop with her unique approach to music making. Lacing her sound with intricate, danceable production and an alluring foreboding backbone, the offering stands up as one of the most unique pieces of creative output of 2024.

You Made Me Not The Same explores the highs and lows of human nature and emotion. The defiant nature of the tracks comes coupled with intense melodies, often electrifying and euphoric. Lyrically, the album makes ties to sexual politics and comments on gender politics, with Nire Bird reclaiming her identity as an artist and a woman.

“Creating this album was inspired by how we interpret our imprints and why we ‘fall’ when in love. I learned a lot of what was expected of me as a woman from my mother – she placed a lot of importance on bearing children, becoming a wife, attracting and looking after a man before I’d lose my so-called ‘charms’. I didn’t believe in these ideals while I was chasing youthful, artistic dreams – but then I fell in love. Sometime later my biological clock chimed and suddenly I was all of the things I didn’t expect to be. I felt uncomfortable with how my emotional and sexual self was being treated after becoming a mother – I felt a little set-up and unsupported in trying to develop my own artistic path and identity again.”

Speaking about the crafting of the tracks, Nire Bird explains, “I wanted to write songs exploring those old imprints and take back my own personal ‘Barbie’ persona and narrative. Mixed with the beauty and euphoria of estrogen, I wanted to channel the doll as an altar of feminine energy and not care for any push-back I was getting from people around me.”
