What does it take to design an office space that leaves a minimal carbon footprint while maintaining a timeless aesthetic?” For Yun Gui, Director and Registered Architect at LSM, it means transcending traditional architecture to create structures that merge beauty, functionality, and environmental responsibility.

At LSM, Yun works on redefining how buildings interact with the environment—setting new standards rather than just meeting them. Through her projects, from low-carbon offices in London to LEED Platinum-certified spaces in Washington, DC, Yun demonstrates that sustainable architecture can be both beautiful and functional.

A Foundation in Architecture and Innovation

Inspired by her parents, both accomplished in architecture and design, Yun Gui developed a deep passion for the field from an early age. She earned her Bachelor’s in Architecture at Ohio State University and a Master’s from Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, gaining valuable experience through internships at Gensler and Corgan.

Since joining LSM, Yun has risen from entry-level roles to Director, leading major projects and teams. In this position, she oversees major projects that highlight her technical skills and innovative thinking. Her expertise and visionary approach have cemented her reputation as a visionary in sustainable architecture.

Redefining Sustainability in Architecture

Sustainability in architecture has become an essential principle that influences every stage of design and construction. Today’s architects must embed environmental responsibility at every stage, transforming design into a means for sustainable innovation.

For Yun, sustainable architecture means designing spaces that effectively balance function and environmental care. She focuses on reusing existing structures, enhancing energy efficiency, and adopting carbon-neutral practices. At LSM, she has led multiple award-winning and media-recognized projects that reflect her commitment to using resources responsibly and promoting sustainability.

Milbank, London

A landmark project in Yun’s portfolio, the 80,000-square-foot law office and conference space for Milbank in London stands as a significant achievement in low carbon design. Leading the design and construction implementation, Yun worked through different phases of the law office fit out in London’s first zero-carbon commercial development. This project reflects the commitment to integrating advanced energy-efficient systems and innovative materials to meet ambitious environmental goals.

K&L Gates, Boston

Yun led the architectural design and execution efforts of this 60,000-square-foot office on the 28th and 29th floors of Boston’s 1 Congress Street. Originally targeted for LEED ‘Certified’ status, the project achieved LEED Silver certification thanks to careful material selection and an efficient HVAC system that enhanced energy performance and occupant health.

South Station Tower, Boston

Currently under construction, the 700,000 feet South Station Tower in Boston is set to become the first newly built U.S. skyscraper to achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating. Yun’s work on key amenities like the Sky Lobby and Fitness Center shows her knack for integrating energy efficiency and green building practices into every detail.

Covington & Burling, London

This project exemplifies sustainable office design at scale. Leading the design and execution of this 110,000-square-foot law office, Yun integrated sustainable materials, energy-efficient lighting, and eco-friendly systems, culminating in a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ certification—a respected measure of sustainability in architecture. She demonstrates her expertise in balancing client needs with high environmental standards, making it a model for sustainable office spaces in the UK.

Carbon Neutral Skyscraper Project, London

Carbon-neutral design is vital, particularly in densely populated areas, where architecture can greatly impact the environment. Such projects provide a blueprint for future urban sustainability, showing that tall buildings can also meet high environmental goals. As the design consultant for tenants of London’s first carbon-neutral skyscraper, Yun is balancing commercial goals, future tenant needs, and urban sustainability.

Yun’s approach to sustainable architecture aims to create spaces that leave a positive impact. Her projects reflect a design philosophy where sustainability guides every step of construction and planning. Through her leadership, Yun is transforming sustainable architecture by proving that functionality, beauty, and environmental care can work together in modern design.

Balancing Tradition with Innovation in Design

Yun Gui’s architectural approach combines timeless principles with advanced technology to meet complex design challenges sustainably. As a LEED Green Associate, Yun leverages tools like Building Information Modeling (BIM) to streamline collaboration and precision, reinforcing her commitment to sustainable practices.

Yun respects architects who persist with a strong vision despite real-world limitations like client demands, costs, and material constraints. Her vision guides Yun in managing projects from concept through completion, using her skills in design, presentation, client communication, and contractor coordination to ensure cohesive results.

Yun’s commitment to accessible, sustainable design is evident in projects like Hamilton Square Repositioning in Washington, DC, where she revitalized common areas using eco-friendly materials. This approach aligns with her belief that effective design must meet both client requirements and environmental needs, demonstrating that great design can—and should—be environmentally conscious.

Thought Leadership and Public Influence

Beyond her architectural projects, Yun actively contributes to the architectural community through speaking engagements and industry panels. She has shared her insights on workplace design at events like Chicago Design Days, where she addressed industry leaders. Through these platforms, Yun advocates for advancing sustainable practices and inspiring emerging architects to embrace eco-friendly approaches.

Her leadership emphasizes adapting to industry standards without compromising on environmental goals, encouraging fellow architects to consider the long-term impacts of their work. Yun’s influence reaches beyond her individual projects as she encourages others to adopt a similar commitment to sustainability, helping shape the future of architecture through her advocacy and mentorship.

Leading with Purpose and Vision

Yun Gui’s focus remains on broadening her impact within the architectural community and driving sustainable practices forward. Transitioning into a management role has allowed her to influence sustainability initiatives at a broader level, guiding LSM’s strategy in eco-friendly practices across its projects.

For Yun, architecture serves as a means to create spaces that support communities and respect the environment. Her path—from a passionate designer to a leader at LSM—illustrates her commitment to making a lasting, positive impact. Through each project, Yun helps redefine what it means to build responsibly, showing that the future of architecture can be both functional and deeply considerate of the world it inhabits.
