Our unexpected journey to the Maremma Natural Park, an hidden gem in Italy

After nearly 30 years away from Italy, my wife and I decided to return to the country that had captured our hearts in the 1990s. While Rome remains eternally beautiful, we found ourselves yearning for a more authentic Italian experience, away from the tourist crowds and urban chaos. That’s when we discovered what would become the highlight of our trip – the pristine Maremma region of Tuscany.

Making the right choice with transportation

The key to our successful adventure was connecting with AR TRANSFER SERVICE, a professional chauffeur service run by Alessandro. As New Yorkers used to reliable transportation, we appreciated Alessandro’s punctuality and deep knowledge of the area. He didn’t just drive us; he became our cultural bridge to this lesser-known part of Italy.

Stepping into another world: Parco della Maremma

Nothing could have prepared us for what we discovered in the Maremma Natural Park. As we began the A1 San Rabano trail, the contrast with our busy Manhattan life couldn’t have been more striking. The park, with its ancient watchtowers and Mediterranean vegetation, felt like stepping into a living history book.

The trail led us through what locals call the “Monti dell’Uccellina” – not really mountains by our American standards, but beautiful hills covered in holm oak forests. What amazed us most was the incredible biodiversity: we spotted deer grazing peacefully, and our guide pointed out traces of wild boars and even wolves that had recently returned to the area.

The medieval marvel of San Rabano

The highlight of our hike was discovering the ruins of the San Rabano Abbey. Coming from a country where “old” usually means 200 years, standing before a 12th-century monastery was mind-blowing. The abbey’s strategic position, overlooking what was once an important medieval trading route, helped us understand how this seemingly remote area was once a crucial center of medieval life.

A taste of authentic Maremma

After our hiking adventure, Alessandro suggested dinner at Agricupido, a charming agriturismo in Cupi. Here, we experienced farm-to-table dining at its finest. The menu changed based on what was harvested that day, and we savored homemade pasta with wild boar ragù, accompanied by their house-fermented fruit beverages – a delightful discovery we’d never encountered before.

Tips for fellow travelers

  • Best time to visit: We went in spring when temperatures were perfect for hiking
  • What to bring: Good walking shoes, water, and a camera – the views are spectacular
  • Transportation: We highly recommend booking a private transfer service like Ar Transfer Service, especially if you’re not comfortable driving in Italy and Tuscany
  • Duration: While we only had one full day, we’d suggest at least two days to fully explore the park

Why choose Maremma over more famous destinations

While places like Florence and Venice are undoubtedly beautiful, the Maremma offers something increasingly rare in modern tourism – authenticity. Here, you can experience a part of Italy that still feels genuine and uncrowded, where ancient traditions live on, and nature thrives undisturbed.

Coming from New York, where every minute is scheduled and every corner is developed, finding such a pristine natural area with layers of history was truly refreshing. It reminded us that sometimes the best travel experiences happen when you venture off the beaten path.

For Americans looking to experience the real Italy, beyond the usual tourist circuit, the Maremma Natural Park offers a perfect blend of nature, history, and authentic Italian culture. It’s a reminder that Italy’s beauty isn’t just in its famous cities but also in its preserved natural spaces and lesser-known regions.
