HBO MAX/DCU Series “Lanterns” Adds Actor Aaron Pierre to High-Flying Cast

Back in the day, there was precisely one Green Lantern flying around in the DC Universe. Introduced in a 1940 copy of All-American Comics #16 from writer-artist team Martin Nodell and Bill Finger as engineer Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern used a mystical power ring to fight against evil. Later on, long after they had retired the original GL, DC ushered in a new era for the character and expanded upon the concept of what it meant to be a Green Lantern by introducing test pilot Hal Jordan as the new and improved version of their heroic mystery man. But they didn’t stop there: DC, under the able writing pens of such luminaries as John Broome, Gardner Fox and Dennis O’Neil expanded upon the concept. By the time they had finished, the Lanterns had grown in size to include a whole plethora of would-be do-gooders. Perhaps the most significant introduction in the GL mythology came when O’Neil and Neal Adams brought to life John Stewart back in 1971, effectively making him the first African American Lantern-carrier/ring slinger. The character caught on and is still very much an active part of the DC comic book world. But you might ask, when will DC finally get around to presenting a decent and proper live action version of Stewart?

From our ever-lovin’ Guy Gardner fans over at The Hollywood Reporter comes the exciting news today that HBO Max and DC have cast actor Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge) as the iconic character of John Stewart in their upcoming Lanterns series. Previously, HBO had announced that actor Kyle Chandler has been officially tapped to play hotshot Green Lantern Hal Jordan.

Word ‘round industry campfire has it that the race to who would become John Stewart for the new superhero series came down to Pierre and fellow thespian Stephan James of The Piano Lesson fame. When the dust had finally settled, DC Studio Big Wheels James Gunn and Peter Safran had opted for Pierre as their green-wearing crime fighter.

As for what viewers and longtime comic book buffs can expect from the upcoming Lanterns series, a little birdie tells us to look for a harder look and feel than a lot of traditional superhero fare. The series proper focuses on Alan Scott successor Hal Jordan and his decision to take on mentoring freshly-minted new GL John Stewart.

Still no word on other casting, but we’re holding out hope for a star-studded reveal for canine Green Lantern G’nort when the show debuts sometime next year! ’til then, stay frosty and keep your eyes and ears towards Vents Magazine for all of your pop culture and Lanterns news; Woof-woof!
