Liu’s talents were on full display in the critically acclaimed film This is Goodbye, which premiered in late 2023. The film, which quickly became a frontrunner for major awards, delves deep into the complexities of a fractured relationship between two young women. The emotional depth of the narrative was brought to life through Liu’s masterful work as the audio editor, mixer, composer, and sound designer, which not only underscored the characters’ inner turmoil but also elevated the entire cinematic experience. Her contribution to this film set a new benchmark in the industry, with her ability to evoke profound emotional responses through sound being lauded as groundbreaking.


Mengting Liu’s collaborations with director Xiuzhi Dong have consistently produced outstanding films, showcasing their strong creative synergy. On June 24, 2022, their documentary Langue premiered at the Palm Springs International ShortFest, a major Oscar-qualifying festival in North America. Langue tells the story of children in a small Honduran town, reflecting on resilience and hope. Liu’s expert sound design added emotional depth through her use of environmental sounds and dialogue. The film made a strong impact, winning a special recommendation at the 4th NOWNESS Talent Awards and was also selected for the 6th Pingyao International Film Festival.

In An Anshan Diaries, another documentary by Dong, Liu’s meticulous sound editing brought three decades of post-Cultural Revolution China to life. The film was nominated for Best Documentary at the 2021 Golden Horse Awards, one of the most prestigious accolades in Chinese-language cinema, often called the “Oscars of the Chinese-speaking world,” highlighting its historical and cultural significance.

Moreover, the film won the Audience Choice Award at the 2022 Pramana Asian Film Festival. This award emphasizes the film’s strong resonance and emotional impact with audiences. The Pramana Asian Film Festival is dedicated to promoting Asian cinema and supporting filmmakers with unique perspectives and innovative approaches, making this recognition a testament to the film’s depth and artistic value as acknowledged by audiences.

In addition to these major accolades, An Anshan Diaries was also selected for several other international film festivals, including the San Francisco International Film Festival, Durban International Film Festival, Beijing International Short Film Festival, and RAI Film Festival. These selections demonstrate the film’s artistic achievements and its widespread recognition on a global scale, further enhancing its status in the international documentary landscape.

After Class is another moving work directed by Xiuzhi Dong, telling the story of a mother who would stop at nothing to secure her daughter’s education. Mengting Liu’s sound design in this film creates a world filled with tension and emotion. Her meticulous use of environmental sounds, background music, and dialogue allows the audience to deeply connect with the characters’ struggles and resilience.

After Class  received widespread acclaim internationally. It won the Best Short Film award at the 2020 Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia, one of Asia’s most prestigious short film festivals and an Academy Award-qualifying event. This recognition not only highlighted the film’s global industry impact but also expanded its distribution opportunities. Additionally, After Class was selected or nominated at several other international festivals, including the Lonely Seal Film Festival, Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival, and Jim Thorpe Independent Film Festival. These accolades further affirmed the film’s artistic value and Mengting Liu’s exceptional talent in sound design. Her ability to evoke deep emotions through sound resonated with both audiences and critics, solidifying her reputation in the field of sound design.

Mengting Liu’s impact on sound design extends beyond individual projects, as she drives the development of cutting-edge technologies set to revolutionize the industry.
