INTERVIEW: Dwelled

1.) We’re excited to have some time today with acclaimed UK metal band extraordinaire Dwelled; greetings and salutations gang and welcome to Vents Magazine! Before we dive into the Q&A mosh-pit, could you all say ‘hi’ and introduce yourselves to our ever-inquisitive readers?

Answer: Hey – we are Dwelled, made up of Matt W (vocals), Matt T (drums), Louis & Sam (guitars)

2.) Major kudos and accolades on your freshly-minted new single Suffer which drops everywhere this October 4! Matt W., can you talk about what inspired this fiery gem of a ditty?

Answer: Thank you so much. The other guys had created this absolute monolith of an instrumental and I remember the first time they sent it to me, it blew my head off. Suffer is an in-your-face, turbulent and angry song which is straight to the point. Not a second to rest, just non stop aggression the whole way through. Lyrically it was something I just wanted to get off my chest, like a big ‘F*** you’.

3.) Louis, who did the producing honors on Suffer and what did the collaboration look like between band and producer while in the studio fashioning and shaping the new single?

Answer: We self record, produce, mix and master our music. This allows for total control over our sound, rather than be constrained by any preconceptions of a producer or limited by fixed studio time. This really helps with our creative freedom, especially when new ideas are put forward and we need to re-record something to better represent the feeling in our heads.

4.) Sam, alongside the release of the new single, Dwelled also has a companion music video for Suffer which is set to also premiere on October 4; congrats! Did the band have as much fun in making the music video for Suffer as we did in watching it?

Answer: We had an awesome time shooting the video, which we filmed and edited ourselves. Part of the video was shot at our practice space and the other half in my garage – one camera, two lights and the mantra of have fun with it. We then compiled the footage and did the edit together, aiming for a raw and gritty feel – we’re stoked with the outcome and glad you enjoyed it!

5.) Matt T., what differentiates Suffer from the Distinguished Competition on the 2024 music scene in your humble opinion?

Answer: Suffer differentiates itself through its unfiltered emotion, DIY sound, and a willingness to take risks that the “Distinguished Competition” avoids. While the competition might rely on expensive & polished production, Suffer embraces a more raw and experimental approach, pushing the boundaries of genre and lyrical content.

6.) Matt W., word ‘round industry campfire has it that, hot on the heels of the October 4 release of the new single and companion music video, Dwelled has a brand-spankin’ debut EP entitled Suffering Heritage which is set to drop this coming December 6; again, major congrats! Can you give readers and fans a hint or three as to what they can expect and look forward to with the upcoming EP release

Answer: The whole EP is a journey from start to finish. I won’t give too much away but it is utter chaos. It starts heavy and ends heavy. There are a few small moments to catch your breath but for the most part, you’re going to have to strap in for the ride. Plenty of blast beats, disgusting breakdowns and haunting ambient soundscapes.

7.) Louis, what does the touring/performing dance card look like for Dwelled in the coming weeks and months?

Answer: Gigs for the remainder of 2024 cover Darwen in Lancashire, Manchester and Northwich in Cheshire. Darwen is a return to Sunbird Records where we performed as “Dwelled” for the 1st time and we can’t wait to return. Manchester takes us to a new venue at the famous Grand Central through Cryptic Promotions and finally we have been invited for a debut appearance at the Salty Dog in Northwich by JTR Promotions. Into 2025 we are heading further North to Barrow-in-Furness where we headline The Meeting Place courtesy of RW Promotions. We are hyped for all these shows.

8.) Sam, how did Dwelled come together to form the tight and innovative band which we hear on the Suffer single? What’s the VH1-Behind the Music secret origin story of the group?

Answer: Louis started a recording project in 2020 during Covid lockdowns in the UK and was on the lookout for a drummer who could contribute to tracks, unexpectedly discovering Matt T who was doing covers on YouTube and sent him a message. Me and Louis had previously played in a band together, and upon hearing initial ideas I jumped onboard. Both Matt’s play in another band together and we asked if he would consider filling in on vocals for a few gigs – after the first practice together it was clear Matt W was the perfect fit and he became a full time member. Since then, everything has further clicked into place with our song-writing, as showcased with “Suffer”, a no-holds barred track demonstrating exactly what Dwelled is about.

9.) Matt T., the members of Dwelled hail from both Kendal and the Greater Manchester area in the United Kingdom. How do those seemingly disparate roots inform the sound and energy of the group?

Answer: All of us in Dwelled have experience in past bands, projects and have been a part of our local scenes for a while. All of this experience and knowledge is what greatly contributes to our sound and how we stay focused on creating high energy tracks which translate to the stage as well.

10.) Matt W., any final thoughts you might like to leave readers with regarding the new single Suffer and the upcoming EP Suffering Heritage?

Answer:  We are all incredibly proud of this EP and had a lot of fun writing it. We hope everyone that listens to it enjoys it and gets the opportunity to check out these songs live. But most of all – I hope you’re ready.
