INTERVIEW: Hard Rock Trio Inside the Trojan Horse

1) We’re super excited to speak with the acclaimed hard rock trio InsideThe Trojan Horse; greetings and salutations gang and welcome to Vents Magazine! Before we dive into the proverbial Q&A mosh-pit, could you all say ‘hi’ and introduce yourselves to our ever-inquisitive reading audience?

Greetings everyone and welcome, I am NoOne.

What’s up good people of earth I am NoThing.

Hello. Pat here. You can call me NoBody.  See you in the mosh pit.

2) Major kudos and accolades on your freshly minted new single Savior! Joe, can you talk about what inspired one of the best new tunes of  2024?

Well first off, thank you so much for your kind words. When Charles sends me music, I don’t generally have a concept or a central image theme in mind. I usually drop the track into Pro Tools, set up a live vocal track, and hit record. A good portion of the lyrics and vocal takes come from that initial experience of hearing for the first time and reflecting on the moment while recording it all in real-time.

3) Charles, Savior was self-produced. What are the pros to producing your music versus outsourcing the task to someone else?

Please call me Nothing. So, in my opinion, there are no cons to producing your music as long as you know how to do it. I am a graduate of YouTube University, so we can all do it! Nobody is telling you how long your songs have to be or to take parts out. You get 100% pure creative freedom, and isn’t that what art is all about?

4) Pat, what differentiates Savior from the Distinguished Competition on the 2024 music scene in your humble opinion?

Savior has a blend of styles and sonics that is unlike any other band I’ve heard.  There are grunge elements on the surface, but if you dig deeper, each instrument brings multiple modern elements in its approach to the song and the overall production. Our sound has a blend of styles that I think is immediately recognizable as Inside the Trojan Horse. There is so much generic music out there and I think we’ve managed to create a sound that is exactly the opposite of that.

5Joe, in the wake of the release of the new Savior single can fans look forward to a possible EP or LP release, either before the end of ‘24 or perhaps sometime in early 2025?

I’m glad you asked. The songs you’re hearing are all part of our first 5 song EP which will drop around the Holidays. The next single to drop will be, How They Run on Wednesday, October 30.

  1. Burn
  2. Savior
  3. How They Run
  4. Stay Alive
  5. Blood and Teeth

6) Charles, what does the touring/performing dance card look like in the coming weeks and months for Inside The Trojan Horse?

Well, I can tell you this -our dance cards are full. We have some signature moves that we’ve named like the “holy Ranchero” No but seriously we want to release our EP and then put our faces, well lack thereof, in front of your faces! Soon!!!

7) Pat, who are some of the musicians both past and present who have influenced the sound of Inside The Trojan Horse?

We all share similar musical influences, but my approach to this project has been to find a way to blend finesse with as much power as I can.  Some of my favorite drummers are Josh Freese, Danny Carey, and Jimmy Chamberlain, all of whom are powerhouse drummers who manage to find so much nuance in their playing.  The same could be said about Joe and Charles and what they bring.  We are mixing beautiful, melodic parts that stand out as high-energy, heavy statements.

8) Joe, what’s the VH1-Behind the Music origin story on how Inside The Trojan Horse came together to form the tight and electrifying band we hear on the new single Savior?

Charles and I met in the mid-2000s in the Island Def jam group Loser with current Motley Crue guitarist John 5. After I moved to Los Angeles, during the making of our album, John and I went to a Perfect Circle show in Hollywood to talk to a few guys in the band about possibly joining. While backstage we met Charles through a mutual AR rep friend. I lived with John for the first few months so, in addition to our non-stop rehearsals, Charles would be at the house daily working with John, honing his craft. We were roommates on tour and shared crazy experiences developing a brother-like relationship. After the breakup, I bought a shitty Pro Tools rig and we began a more than decades-long quest to become not only better writers and producers but ultimately, develop a unique and impactful style all our own.

9) Charles, the members of Inside The Trojan Horse all come to this new group with some major combined music chops as part of their past efforts with other bands such as Red Sun Rising, Gemini Syndrome, and Jibe! For yourself at least, what lessons and hard-earned experience do you take away from your past band and now apply to Inside The Trojan Horse?

Well, I’d like to be diplomatic here. You have to have 100% trust in your business partners like I do with NoOne and Nobody. Since we are all equals we all have 1/3 share of all decisions and that is key! It helps keep everyone working just as hard. So those of you out there reducing bassists and drummers down to a lower rate well….. you’re wrong!

10) Pat, at the end of the day what do you hope listeners walk away with after giving many-a-listens to the new single Savior?

A song like “Savior” and all of our music for that matter, is supposed to latch onto you as a listener.  It’s not just another flash-in-the-pan song enjoyed for a few weeks and passed on.  These songs are supposed to impact you on a deeper level and I think if you let it, it will do just that.  Some headbanging is also encouraged.
