INTERVIEW: Italian DJ Nuby

1. We’re very happy to be speaking today with acclaimed music artist, DJ, and music producer Vincenzo Nubile, who most of the ever-lovin’ world knows by his far-famed moniker of Nuby; greetings and salutations Vincenzo and welcome to Vents Magazine! Before we jump down the Q&A rabbit hole, how is the summer of 2024 treating you and yours?

Thank you for having me! Summer 2024 has been a whirlwind of excitement and creativity. I’ve had the pleasure of performing across Italy, soaking up the vibrant energy of different cities, and connecting with fans in new ways. It’s been a season of inspiration, and I feel incredibly fortunate to be doing what I love.

2. Major kudos and accolades on your vibrant and nostalgic single “Hi Ibiza”! Starting at the top, can you explain how this gem of a ditty came into being? What’s the VH1-Behind the Music origin of one of the very best single releases of ‘24?

“Hi Ibiza” is a love letter to the timeless energy of the ‘80s combined with the pulsating beats of today’s house music. I wanted to capture that feeling of freedom and euphoria that Ibiza embodies. The idea started while I was experimenting with retro sounds—specifically trying to bring back the warmth of the analog synths used in the ’80s and blend them with modern production techniques. It was about creating a track that could transport listeners to another place, a dreamscape where the sun is always setting and the party never ends.

3. As a rightly lauded producer in your own right, is it a safe bet to assume that you did the producing honors on “Hi Ibiza”? And, if so, what are the pros to serving as your own producer?

Yes, I produced “Hi Ibiza” myself. The beauty of being your own producer is the complete creative freedom it offers. You’re able to fully shape the sound without compromise. It allows me to experiment and push boundaries until I achieve exactly what I envision. The downside is that it can be hard to know when to stop! But overall, I think producing my own music ensures that it remains authentic and true to my artistic vision.

4. How is “Hi Ibiza” similar to some of your past music, such as 2015’s “Le Sax”? How is it different?

“Hi Ibiza” and “Le Sax” both share a love for uplifting, melodic house music, but they differ in their emotional landscapes. “Le Sax” was more about groove and brass-driven melodies, while “Hi Ibiza” is a deeper dive into nostalgia, capturing the essence of the ‘80s with a modern twist. Over the years, I’ve become more focused on how music can tell a story, and “Hi Ibiza” feels like a natural evolution—melding the old and the new in a way that resonates with today’s listeners.

5. In the wake of the July 21 release of “Hi Ibiza”, can fans look forward to catching you on the touring/performing circuit?

Absolutely! I’m gearing up for more live shows across Italy, and hopefully beyond. Performing is one of the most rewarding aspects of my career—it’s where I get to see how people connect with my music in real-time. Stay tuned, because I’ll be bringing “Hi Ibiza” and other favorites to dancefloors everywhere very soon.

6. Can you give readers a hint or three as to what you have coming up musically after “Hi Ibiza”? Will an EP or LP release be in the cards for you before the end of the year?

I’m currently in the studio working on new material that expands on the sound of “Hi Ibiza.” Fans can expect an EP later this year, which will continue to explore the fusion of retro sounds with modern house music. Each track will tell its own story, but together they’ll form a cohesive journey through sound.

7. Who out there in the annals of the music world has inspired you and your own indelible music?

My inspirations span across decades—artists like Giorgio Moroder and Daft Punk have been huge influences on me. Moroder for his groundbreaking work in the electronic music scene, and Daft Punk for their ability to fuse retro and modern sounds so seamlessly. I’m also deeply influenced by the house music scene that emerged in Chicago and Detroit, as well as the vibrant energy of the Italian disco era.

8. In your humble opinion, what differentiates “Hi Ibiza” from the Distinguished Competition on the 2024 music scene?

“Hi Ibiza” stands out because it’s not just about the beats, but the emotions and memories it evokes. Many tracks in 2024 are focused on production perfection, but “Hi Ibiza” taps into something more visceral—it’s nostalgic, yet fresh. I think it resonates because it feels like an invitation to escape, to dance, and to lose yourself in the music, which is exactly what house music should do.

9. You hail from the beautiful country of Italy. How do those specific roots inform you not only as an artist, but as a person?

Being from Italy, and specifically growing up in the Basilicata region before moving to Milan, has shaped who I am both as an artist and a person. The contrast between the tranquility of the Basilicata countryside and the hustle of Milan’s vibrant city life influences how I approach music. I try to blend these two worlds—crafting music that has depth and emotion, but also an urban edge. Italy’s rich history, art, and passion inspire everything I create.

10. Any final thoughts you might like to leave readers with regarding your latest masterpiece “Hi Ibiza”?

I’d just like to say thank you to everyone who has listened and supported “Hi Ibiza.” This track is meant to make people feel alive, to remind them of the power of music to bring us together. I can’t wait to share more of what’s to come—this is just the beginning!
