1.) We’re super-excited to have some time today with acclaimed writer and producer Sean V. Baker; greetings and salutations Sean and welcome to Vents Magazine! Before we charge down the dark and horror-tinged Q&A rabbit hole, how is the back-end of 2024 treating you and yours?
Salutations, it’s a pleasure to have another chance to interview with Vents Magazine! 2024 has been a great year for me going into 2024 I released the trailer to my short film Double Dealings & now I am working on amazing horror film titled “Mirrors” with the brilliant and creative executive producer Chardell Powell. Last but not least I officially started my production studio Sean Baker Studios!
2.) Major kudos and accolades on your upcoming horror feature film Mirrors! Starting at the tip-top, can you give our ever-inquisitive readers a hint or three as to what Mirrors is about and what inspired you to write it?
So when in comes to Mirrors Chardell Powell put the thought in my mind to create a horror film I thought of a concept & collaborated with writer Rick Long to put it together from there Chardell put his creative twist on it & now writer Brenae Perkins put the finishing touches on it so it was a team effect to bring this great project to life. I would just say expect to go on a horrifying journey like never before.
3.) Ricky Long and Brenae Perkins are listed as your fellow wordsmiths on Mirrors! Can you talk about what it was like collaborating with this talented duo on the mirrors screenplay?
Both writers are amazing at what they do I was fortunate and lucky enough to even have the chance to collaborate with such talented writers. It’s been an amazing journey so far and I am looking forward to working on more projects with both writers.
4.) Speaking of collaborations, what’s it been like collaborating with super-talented director Terica Kindred on Mirrors? What made Terica the best choice as a director for the film?
Terica is a super talented director that where many hats she’s a director plus more. The first time seeing Terica’s work I was blown away, once I spoke with her, her acknowledge & brilliance when it comes to film was immaculate.
5.) As we noted at the top, Mirrors plies its trade in the realm of the scary. What makes the horror genre such an evergreen at the box-office? What do you feel the eternal appeal is to audiences?
I feel like everyone has a bit of curiosity of what it may be like to be terrified but not close enough to want to deal with those experiences in real life. So the going to the theaters to see a scary movie is like a guilty pleasure which causes that film to do great in the box-office.
6.) Can you introduce the reading audience to the talented cast that populates the new horror film Mirrors?
We’ll be surprising the audience real soon with the cast, stay tuned!
7.) Screenwriting-wise, who are you inspired by?
I am inspired by many screenwriters, such as Jordan Peele, Donald Glover, Issa Rae & Quentin Tarantino just to name a few. I will be here for days if I tried to list everyone lol.
8.) You also have a number of other productions as a writer which are cooking on the stove even as we speak; congrats! Can you tell us a little about On the Run, Cross the Line and Double Dealings?
On the Run is gonna be a wild ride in the life of a young girl name Jasmine who’s faced with so many different adversities that many young woman go through but is afraid to discuss or do not know how to discuss in that project is written by myself, Rick Long and the talented Ashley Brittney Silva of Love and Marriage: DC. Cross The Line will be a great story for the dance lovers I would just say image Drumline Meets You Got Served that project is written by myself and the talented writer Rikki Gunnell
9.) At the end of the day, what do you hope audiences walk away with after checking out your upcoming horror film Mirrors?
Hopefully they’ll be terrified of mirrors from the day this movie is released until forever.
10.) Final – SILLY! – Question: Favorite horror film – Robert Wise’s version of The Haunting, Rosemary’s Baby, The Uninvited, The Exorcist, The Legend of Hell House or It Follows?
I would have to say the original “The Exorcist” I remember seeing it as a kid and being scared for weeks to sleep in my own bed. The flashing of the demonic creatures still gives me nightmares from time to time lol.
