Catching Up with Joshua Turchin

Multi-hyphenate performer Joshua Turchin is always working on something whether it is working on music, creating a new musical, or producing a show at one of the many clubs in New York. He recently had not one but two projects at the famous 54 Below. It’s been a while since I interviewed Joshua so I was eager to find out what else he has planned for his fans.

Hi, Joshua. Welcome to Ventsmagazine. How are you doing?

I’m doing well! Thank you for having me!

1. You have 2 new projects coming up at Below 54 in New York. What can you tell us about each project?

I just had a couple of really fun shows at 54 Below. The first one was 54 Sings High School, and was a show featuring music from many different musicals about high school. The second one was 54 Sings Greek Myths, which featured music from musicals based on Greek myths!

2. What was the inspiration behind each of these projects?

I love Greek myths so it felt natural to do a show about them. I also love shows like Dear Evan Hansen, Heathers, and more, which play on more teen concepts.

3. I’m sure it was a lot of fun working on these projects. Is there a funny story from rehearsals you would like to share?

During band rehearsals for Greek Myths, there was a giant parade outside the building. Those in the show were messaging me where they were, so I decided I would check outside, not thinking anyone was there. I look to the left and see no one. I look to the right and I see no one. I look a little more to the right, and the incredibly talented Lola Tung (who was in the show) goes “Hi!” I didn’t actually think anyone was outside, and I JUMPED back.

4. You are also working on a new musical. What can you tell us about that? Where are you in the process of it?

Yes! I’m working on a musical about the golden age of piracy. I’ve written a few drafts of the script as well as several songs, and will be doing a private reading soon as I develop it.

5. What’s the biggest hurdle have you ever faced in your life?

Managing working and free time. I’m working on scheduling my time and putting events on calendars so I don’t end up feeling overworked.

6. What is it you like most about being a musician?

I love playing music. I love working with other musicians. I love working with other actors. I love everything about it!

7. Do you have any other future projects you can talk about?

I have a few shows coming up soon this year at 54 Below and The Green Room 42 in NYC, and am working on some new music to hopefully release soon.

8. Where can people connect with you?

You can follow me everywhere at @joshuaturchin
