In a broad sense, jewelry includes jewelry, crafts, or other collectibles made of gold, silver , and natural materials that have a certain value. This definition covers everything from traditional jade products to modern jewelry made from artificial stones and synthetic materials.
Jewelry is not only a kind of precious ornament or collection but also a human’s pursuit of beauty, the crystallization of human creativity, and people’s pursuit and aspiration for a better life. For jewelry collectors, collecting, inheriting, and sharing their cherished jewelry makes their lives richer and more wonderful. For the majority of women, jewelry can show the unique temperament and charm of women. In addition, jewelry also has emotional and commemorative significance, allowing the wearer to remember a special moment and important person. Today, we will talk about the whole process of making jewelry.
Currently, on the market, we see a variety of jewelry after carving, polishing, and inlaid after the birth of the shiny and sparkling, a variety of styles of jewelry, interpretation of beauty, fashion, and classic. But in fact, each piece of jewelry has to go through a number of processes, including design, production, grinding, polishing, etc., these steps should be fine and rigorous operation. Specifically can be divided into eight parts, namely, jewelry design, hand-carved wax plate, mold, mold, stone, set jewelry, polishing electric gold, and quality control.
Step 1: Design Drawing
The designer will first conceptualize and sketch the new piece on paper, using pencil and gouache to complete the design. The time for this process is basically variable, ranging from a few days or half a month to several months before a jewelry style can be finalized. The finalization of a design requires consideration of many factors, taking into account both the aesthetic, but also to take into account the artistry and cost. If the style is defined, is it to be fashionable and exquisite? Or to the upscale atmosphere? Also, consider the material process as well as the bare stone with the brand concept to have the designer’s unique style to the clear expression of the central idea.
Step 2: Hand-carved Wax Starting Plate
Craftsman, with reference to the design drawings and hand-carved wax plate, this step is the most demanding process in the jewelry production process. The wax plate must be clean, and each part of the structure needs to be reasonable; the location of the inlaid gemstones and the size must be accurate. With the development of science and technology, the number of handmade jewelry is gradually decreasing, and most of them use CAD software to draw. But also depends on the specific circumstances, for some special shape of the jewelry, or let a good master hand-carved wax starting plate.
Step3: Inverted Mold
If the jewelry is mass-produced, the wax plate can be made into a silver plate and then pressed into a film. But if it is customized special jewelry, it needs to be molded. The steps of pouring
the mold can be divided into six steps.
1.Make a wax tree: Weld each wax ring to the wax stick in turn to form a wax tree similar to the shape of a large tree.
2. Plastering: A stainless steel cylinder is attached to the planted wax tree with the chassis, and a corresponding weight of plaster paste is slowly poured along the cylinder and over the wax tree, vacuumed, and left for 6 hours to 8 hours to solidify and take shape.
3 . Baking Plaster: Place the plaster in the mold at a certain temperature for baking.
4. Casting: Take out the baked plaster mold and prepare the metal solution for casting. Put the melted and prepared cold water into the water spout.
5. Plaster Mold Cleaning:Plaster molds are very hot after casting, so they need to be removed and left to stand for 10 minutes to half an hour before being placed in cold water to be cleaned. After the gypsum shrinkage, take out the gold tree and use a steel brush to brush off the larger pieces of gypsum. It is then placed in a 30% hydrofluoric acid solution for about 10 minutes, removed and the remaining plaster washed.
6. Shear casting: cut the jewelry on the gold tree along the bottom, and then dry it can be completed.
Step 4: Molding
This step requires manual operation, using a special calender knife to push back and forth on the surface of the jewelry; this process requires a certain degree of skill and technique.
Step 5: Matching Stones

According to the jewelry design, the diamonds or gemstones are sorted by hand, and those with the right color, cut, and size are picked out and prepared for setting. The most important part of this step is the cutting of the gemstones. Due to the wide variety of gemstones, each one has different characteristics. Therefore, before the cutting is carried out, the cutting plan needs to be further determined according to the characteristics of this original stone. Here, in order to ensure the accuracy of the process, the instruments that can generally be used include pneumatic jewelry engraving machine, pneumatic impact engraving machine or pneumatic hand engraving machine.Of course, when it comes to more delicate gemstone engraving, tools such as a stereoscopic microscope are essential.
Step 6: Setting the Stone
Gemstone setting is the true test of the setter’s handiwork, hand-setting each diamond and gemstone. If the design is relatively simple, then the setting is naturally easier; if the design involves a complex process or more gemstones are used, then the difficulty will be at a higher level. Therefore, the time required for this step varies.
Step 7: Polished Gold
If you want to make the jewelry more dazzling, then you need further to polish the surface and details of the metal. In addition, some of the jewelry needs to have the surface treated with an electric gold process to make the surface smoother.
Step 8: Quality Control
After the jewelry production is completed, the finished jewelry needs to be checked. If it is not qualified, it will be returned to the previous process to be made again. The purpose of this step is to ensure the quality of the jewelry.
