What’s so special about the 1988/89 season? The 1988/89 season was Liverpool FC’s 27th consecutive year playing top-tier football. Liverpool FC won their fourth Football Association Challenge Cup (FA Cup) that year, and that period was also marked for greatness by football legends the likes of Ian Rush, John Barnes and John Aldridge.
More importantly, it was the year of the Hillsborough Disaster. On 15 April 1989, Liverpool and Nottingham Forest faced off for the FA Cup semi-final match. Liverpool fans were, of course, out in full force to support the Reds. The great crowds caused a fatal crush in the standing-only pens allocated to Liverpool FC fans at the Hillsborough Stadium, injuring 766 and tragically killing 97.
Trivia: Liverpool continues to immortalise and remember these fans with the number 97 set between two eternal flames at the back of the collar of Liverpool FC football shirts.
