Honey Motel are back with their emphatic debut EP ’The Manatee’ on their journey to bring indie pop back into the limelight. Formed in Liverpool, the group made their debut on streaming services in 2023 and have since moved from strength to strength turning thousands of heads in the process.
Starting with the feel-good anthem ‘Are You Coming With Me’, ‘The Manatee’ bursts out the speakers like a hot knife through butter. Right from the get-go it’s clear that these boys are not messing around when it comes to music making. The way the streams of guitars layer together to produce a sound that embodies the nostalgic elements of jangle pop with an emphatic contemporary twist feels as familiar as it does new.
The EP holds nothing back in the way of emphatic choruses and anthemic melodies. ‘The Matinee’ and midpoint ‘Punch Drunk’ keep the EP flowing, not shying away from Honey Motel’s signature blend of psychedelic pop and indie rock. Providing the assertive, retrospective closure to ‘The Manatee’ sits ‘Coping Mechanism’. Slowing the tempo down, the closer provides an emotionally charged ending to a whirlwind of a debut EP.
Speaking about the themes behind the EP, guitarist Sam Meredith explains, “If anybody tells you they know exactly what they are doing in this life, they are lying. As you get into your twenties all those who you think have it figured out really don’t, and those who seem really lost aren’t that lost at all… Just relax, some of the most interesting people I’ve met don’t know what they are meant to be doing in this life.”
You can almost think of this body of work as an ode to a celebration of youth. Honey Motel’s willingness to embody the chaotic nature of teenage house parties and adolescent nights out into sensational indie pop cements them as one of the most exciting bands in their game right now.
