This upcoming weekend, the annual Surf Guitar 101 festival will take place at Golden Sails Hotel, in Long Beach, CA. The three-day event carries on a tradition that started back in 2008 and has grown over the years. It features headliners from around the world performing classic as well as highly stylized variations on surf music.
From Friday until Sunday, the sold-out host hotel will fill its Crystal Ballroom and its Taboo Tiki room with not only the most popular surf guitar acts but also burlesque performances, a screening of the surf music documentary film The Sound of the Surf, a panel discussion with Will Glover of The Pyramids, moderated by Jonpaul Balak (DJ / musician), and, on Sunday, a vintage bathing suit competition.
The line-up features dozens of bands and includes a number of headliners who are marking special occasions. Specifically, The Surfaris are celebrating over 60 years of “Wipe Out”; The Ghastly Ones are performing an exclusive reunion show; The Mermen make a rare SoCal appearance; The Untamed Youth hold a historic reunion, featuring Deke Dickerson; and Insect Surfers will celebrate 45 years of performing.
The burlesque performers include Kasey Kupcake, Luna LoveLee, Lacey Lilac, Miss Magnolia, Nadia Lotte, and, direct from Hawaii, Miss Savvy.
The event also features a bazaar of surf and surf-related products. A rep said that the curated vendors will comprise “one of the greatest selections of surf music-related products under one roof, including current and vintage records, t-shirts, books, posters, other paper ephemera, Tiki mugs, guitar pedals and accessories, DVDs and more.”For the complete line-up, ticketing information, and other event details, visit SurfGuitar101.
