If ever the horror genre had its own version of comfort food – you know what we mean: a warm cup of tomato soup and an ooey-gooey grilled cheese sandwich – the recognition and honor should go to 1997’s hit movie I Know What You Did Last Summer. There’s something absolutely and totally reliable and even comforting about the scares in this Jim Gillespie-directed flick which actually transcends anything genuinely disturbing and creepy (for example: It Follows or the original version of The Haunting could never be accused of being horror comfort food). With the camera-work looking as if it had been lovingly lifted from a Hallmark movie-of-the-week along with a bevy of good looking teen characters doing pretty dumb things, I Know What You Did Last Summer is reassuring in its safe scares and well-lit Coastal fishing town digs. And frankly, we wouldn’t have it any other way.
From our Morton Fisherman muchachos over at The Hollywood Reporter comes the news today that I Know What You Did Last Summer is finally receiving a reboot/sequel/remake treatment with new cast members officially announced this very day. For anyone keeping tally, there have been a total of three I Know movies as well as a done-in-one season television series. And that doesn’t even begin to touch upon the groundspring from whence it all sprang forth from, author Lois Duncan’s 1973 novel of the same name. One wonders where else filmmakers can possibly go with the premise past a certain point, but we’ll put our hard-earned greenbacks on the studio arranging the new film, Sony Pictures, to figure it all out.
As for the new victims/characters in the upcoming I Know flick, expect to see plenty of screaming and all-out running in terror from the likes of Madelyn Cline and Camila Mendes who will apparently be the leads in the new story. Joining them will be Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers and Jonah Hauer-King.
Talk of a reboot/revisit of I Know What You Did Last Summer has actually been going on for some time, and if you’re a card-carrying fan club member of Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt from the first two films in the franchise, then this new chapter might be for you: Word ‘round industry campfire has it that this new film is a so-called ‘legacy sequel’ (think the new Star Wars trilogy, Cobra Kai or The Mighty Ducks where a new generation is shepherded into stardom by the original stars), meaning that even as we speak, Prinze and Hewitt’s agents are negotiating furiously on their clients behalf to win this spots in the new film.
Bringing both the surviving band members back to the big screen as well as the proverbial new bloods will be director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson of Do Revenge fame who co-wrote the screenplay for the next bloody chapter alongside scribe Sam Lansky (with a nod to an earlier script from Leah McKendrick). One of the original producers from the first I Know film, Neal Mortiz, is returning for second helpings with the new film.
The new I Know What You Did Last Summer movie will premiere on July 18, 2025. Here’s hoping it can approximate that warm comfort food feeling of the original!
