Building an Inclusive India: The Accessible India Campaign and Svayam’s Role

Imagine a vibrant India, welcoming to everyone. Now imagine the challenges faced by people with disabilities (PwDs) navigating this landscape. Lack of ramps, inaccessible transport, and low awareness create significant barriers.

The Accessible India Campaign (AIC), launched in 2015, is a national mission to transform India into a truly inclusive nation. It tackles accessibility on multiple fronts, empowering PwDs and unlocking their potential.

Beyond Ramps: A Multi-Pronged Approach

The AIC goes beyond physical accessibility. It focuses on:

  • Built Environment: Making buildings, schools, and workplaces accessible with ramps, elevators, and wider doorways.
  • Transportation: Ensuring accessible buses, trains, and taxis.
  • Information & Communication: Providing information through sign language, audio descriptions, and user-friendly websites.

A Ripple Effect of Change

The AIC’s multi-pronged approach is making a significant impact. Increased awareness leads to a more inclusive society, while policy changes ensure long-term accessibility. Accessibility audits and solutions translate these policies into tangible improvements.

Svayam: A Champion for Accessibility

Since 2000, Svayam, a leading disability rights organization, has been a driving force for accessibility. They actively support the AIC in various ways:

  • Accessibility Audits: Svayam assesses accessibility in government buildings, hospitals, police stations, and railway stations.
  • Advocacy: They push for policy changes and infrastructure improvements.
  • Collaboration: Svayam works with stakeholders to create a more inclusive environment.

Svayam’s dedication is evident:

  • Over 335 public buildings audited, including bus stands, courthouses, and city infrastructure projects.
  • Advocacy for ramps, lifts, and accessible toilets in railway stations.

The Road Ahead

The goal is a barrier-free India where everyone can access opportunities and lead fulfilling lives. Svayam’s work, combined with the AIC’s efforts, is helping create a more inclusive India for everyone, with or without disabilities.
